Four Cyclists To Compete in New York
Four junior cyclists will be representing Bermuda this weekend at the prestigious Tour of the Battenkill in Cambridge, NY. Dubbed “America’s Toughest 1-Day Race”, the 64 mile course in rural upstate New York includes sections of unpaved roads, steep climbs and one wooden covered bridge.
Representing Bermuda will be Dominique Mayho, Mark Godfrey, Vashon Cann and Tre-shun Correia. The quartet has raced together internationally several times including last year at the Highand Rim Classic in Tennessee and at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Aruba.
On the start line Mayho and the rest of the Bermuda team will join approximately 110 other juniors aged 15 -18 from the northeast USA, Canada and a few from as far away as California in a race that has rapidly grown in numbers and notoriety. While the race distance should prove manageable by the local riders, it is the high caliber of talent that they will face that will make for novel challenge. Added to this will be the demanding combination of steep hills, several unpaved sections and cooler than usual temperatures.
Also participating in the event are 17 other Bermuda cyclists from local teams Fast Forward Bicycle Works and Team Madison.
The Battenkill race comes one week before the Bermuda Bicycle Association’s 2011 road racing season gets underway with the Butterfield Bermuda Grand Prix and the preparation for the long race in New York has served as a preliminary goal for the junior cyclists in building race endurance. As the local season progresses focus will turn to local championships for time trial and road race and the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in August.
Good luck Fellas! Good stuff Tre-shun!!!
