Three Bermudians On Top Ranked Sailing Team
The Roger Williams sailing team, which includes three Bermudian sailors, is the top-ranked co-ed team in the U.S.
That’s according to the latest collegiate sailing poll by Sailing World magazine, which determines the rankings based on an open coaches’ poll. This was the fifth ranking for the Spring 2011 season, based on results through April 17.
The Hawks received 374 total points as one of 20 ranked teams on the co-ed poll. Number two ranked Georgetown received 371 points and the third-ranked Charleston received 356.
The team includes three sailors plucked from the ranks of the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association in their younger days, Haley Powell, Sean Bouchard and Cameron Pimentel.
“We are Number 1!” says RWU Coach Amanda Callahan. “The top co-ed team in the country! This is a big milestone for the team – we’ve been ranked second many times in the past, but this is the first time we’re sitting on top. As you can imagine, it feels amazing.”
Roger Williams is coming off a successful month that saw the team win the New England Co-ed Dinghy Championship, in addition to the Central Series Four and the Friis Trophy. The Hawks also placed second in the Krueger Cup, the Central Four and the Gibb Trophy. This past weekend they also placed 3rd in their regional collegiate semi finals and will be one of eighteen teams competing for the National Championships.
Way to go
Well done
Congratulations guys.
These young people are winners. They are the product of Bermuda sailing that was well supported. They are not alone in their sport. What does Government do to the sailing grant in the budget? Slash it to next to nothing.
Meanwhile the losers in cricket & soccer get hundreds of thousands.
Loosers in football, by what standards? Does dozens of boys and girls receiving scholarships to attend prep schools and Universities each year amounting to millions of dollars not indicate success. Does Lambe and Wells being picked up by Ipswich and Carlisle and two other boys on the cusp of signing with 1 non league team and Derby County academies not indicate success?
We seem to make very strange comparisons between sports played by a small segment of most socities, often excluding those that don’t have financial resorces, with a sport played by a significantly higher percentage of most countries population and by their BEST athletes.
Only fools would think that Bermuda and its 39,000 citizens could compete with Mexico, the USA, Canada, Costa Rica and even Jamaica and Trinidad. And the last time I checked only 4 teams from that group can quaify for the top competiton in the world, the World Cup. Eliminate footballs budget at your peril.Haven’t you accepted by now, that the vast, vast majority of young boys in this country and throughout the world love football and see sailing as a mode of transportation.
You my friend are comparing apples with oranges and most if not all right people accept this. And by the way, eliminate a football budget and then what.
Awesome!!! Congrats guys, keep up the good work.. maybe now you will get some more support
