Former Cup Match Players To Be Honored

Heritage Productions will host its 7th Annual Emancipation Celebration Awards Luncheon Sunday, July 17th 2011 beginning at 1:00 pm in Dr. E. F. Gordon Hall of the Bermuda Industrial Union Building on Union Street in Hamilton.

The luncheon is an occasion when former Cup Match players are recognized and awarded not only for their participation and contribution to the summer classic but also for upholding and promoting Bermuda’s cultural heritage.

Each year players from both Somerset Cricket Club and St Georges Cricket Club are recognized and this year, the Somerset recipients consist of Clyde Best, Stuart Durham, Gary Fray, and Winston “Coe” Trott. St. George’s recipients include Philip Smith, Vernon Foggo, Rupert “Nick” Hollis and Noel Gibbons.

Clyde Best played Cup Match between 1966 – 1968 and he batted 4 times scoring a total of 21 runs with his highest score being 12 not out. Best bowled 2 overs in the Classic taking 1 wicket for 23 runs and he also took a catch.

Stuart Durham played one Cup Match in 1968 where he batted twice scoring 24 runs in one inning and 11 in the other for his 35 runs.

Gary Fray played in the Classics between 1968 -1974 and he batted four times scoring a total of 30 runs. 16 was his highest score while Fray bowled 1 over during his time in Cup Match giving up only 1 run and taking 3 catches.

Between 1968 & 1983 Winston Trott batted 14 times in Cup Match scoring 169 runs. He was not out 6 times with a high score of 32 and was primarily picked for his bowling. In that department he tossed down 234.4 overs where 42 of them were maidens and he gave up 806 runs and took a total of 36 wickets as well as taking 6 catches.

Philip Smith batted 4 times during the period of 1973 & 1975. He scored 38 runs with a top score of 19, bowled 2 overs giving up 10 runs and also took 2 catches.

Vernon Foggo played back to back Cup Matches in 1967 & 1968 where he batted 3 times, scoring 24 total runs with 20 being his highest score and he also managed to hold on to 3 catches.

Rupert Hollis played in Cup Match in 1972 & 1973. He batted twice scoring 3 runs with a top score of 2, bowled 13 overs, gave up 50 runs and grabbed 1 wicket.

Noel Gibbons played his first Cup Match in 1971 and his last in 1993. During that time he batted a total of 40 times scoring a total of 783 runs. His top score in the Classic was 82 and he was not out 3 times. Gibbons bowled a total of 259.2 overs with 55 maidens, gave up 849 runs, took 33 wickets and also held onto 12 catches.

A special award will be presented to Mr. Rick Richardson for his outstanding service and being instrumental in broadcasting the Cup Match Classic for so many years.

Special guests in attendance this year will include the Minister of Community Development, The Honorable Michael Weeks J.P., M.P., Senator Cromwell Shakir J.P., President of St. George’s Cricket Club, Neil Paynter and former President of Somerset Cricket Club, Richard Scott as well as other local dignitaries.
