Results, Photos & Video: Power Boat Races
Bermuda Powerboat Racing continued at Ferry Reach, with the very large crowd on hand thrilled as the boats made their way out of the pillions to head up the North Shore.
With a bit of a chop on the North Shore drivers and co-pilots were tested both coming and going.
In the day’s first race Jermaine Butterfield and Kareem Johnson racing in the S Class came close to flipping over when trying to return into the pylons. As they negotiated a left turn to line up for Ferry Reach the boat hit a wave and ended up on its side. Luckily the boat did manage to stay upright, however the pair then encountered another problem as they were heading straight for the rocks just on the outside of the pylons.
The boat with Butterfield and Johnson onboard was left helpless as they had no power. The boat did come in contact with the rocks and with luck on their side again they bounced back off the rocks. After a brief inspection of the engines, the pair decided they could continue and to the delight of the many onlookers they powered and got back into the race.
In Bermuda Offshore Model Boat Association racing also at Ferry Reach Mike Lee ended the day on top of the Sport Class Leaderboard with 153 points, Derek Simons finished second with 120 points, third went to Kiaune Basden who finished with 60 points while Quintonio Ratteray came 4th with 15 points and Gavin Woolridge ended in 5th place with 10 points.
Derek Simons won the Open Class title for the day with 105 points, Damon Simons finished 2nd with 65 points, Bryan Roach was third with 60 points and Leo Fox finished 4th with 5 points.

Hey Guys everyone has a turn just get in as much practice as U can. I had my TURNS but just got better at it. Around the Island should not b hard for U guy’s at all. Get out there Practice, Practice n more Practice Rough day’s n Calm.
Bernews reporter, you obviously don’t understand speed and cornering in a raceboat of this type. The ‘almost’ crash was due to trying to corner at a speed too fast for the catamaran hull to adapt to. But, as Mr Simons stated above, in time with practice(and lots of it) they will get the hang of it. Witnessing this, I take my hat of to Kareem and Jermaine, because they, as a team gave a good account of themselves in avoiding any worse damage or injury. Keep on ‘PUSHIN’ guys. It was great to finally see a ‘little touch’ of the days gone by, when Mr Simons ran S241 hard like that(and others too). And might I add, this was the 1st time in almost 8 years that I even bothered to watch boat races down at Ferry Reach. Can’t wait for next race.
That’s S941.
Jermaine has d boat for sure and with PLEANTY of practice they WILL get the job done.
My bad, it’s been a while. lol….need to check my archives of old pictures. I have PLENTY of them.
