Community Day Facebook Photo Challenge

August 9, 2011

Last month summer interns from seven companies took part in The Centre on Philanthropy’s Community Day Facebook Photo Challenge, with the team from XL emerging as the Challenge’s winner (thanks to a last second tie-breaker).

The Community Day paired teams of interns from XL, PwC, ACE, Belco, Endurance, Ariel Re, and Flagstone Re with six local charities for a day of volunteering.

Activities included clean-ups at the National Museum of Bermuda, BIOS and the Bermuda Museum, Aquarium and Zoo (BAMZ), painting for the Bermuda Gymnastics Association (BGA), ‘The Amazing Race Cook Off’ for the Eliza Dolittle Society and the ‘Beautification of Somersfield Academy’.

Participants were also ‘challenged’ to take a photo that represented their project and their company and to submit it to The Centre’s Facebook page. They then had to get people to ‘like’ their photo and the team with the most likes won the Challenge.

“We posted the link on our profile pages so that our ‘friends’ could like it, fortunately we had a lot of support,” says Alex Abbott from team XL .

XL and PwC both garnered 49 likes with XL eventually winning by being the quickest to respond to the tie-breaking question about volunteering in Bermuda (also posted on Facebook).

“Social Media can be an excellent way to engage people in community events and we’re very pleased the teams had so much fun with the Challenge,” comments Jennifer Pitcher, Volunteer Programme Coordinator for The Centre.

Team XL’s Community Day included cleaning the historic displays in the Boat Loft at the National Museum of Bermuda, which they described as “hot and tiring but a lot of fun and really interesting.”

“Our supervisor, Greg Wiker, is an American doing his Masters in Bermuda History, so he was telling us all about our own country! It was great to give back to the community and learn something about Bermuda history at the same time,” explains Stacy Oughton of team XL.

Their day culminated in a “behind the scenes” tour of the museum grounds, some of the newly excavated tunnels and the former prison at Casemates. All of the students commented on the value of the day as a team building exercise.

The Centre’s Community Day programme gives local charities the opportunity to submit a proposal for a volunteer project that can be completed in one day. The Centre then recruits participation from companies, and projects are chosen based the interest expressed by the company.

The Centre would like to thank all the companies and charities for participating in the Community Day, and the Facebook Challenge. To see the photos from the Challenge, and the answers to the tie-breaker, you can visit Facebook.com/thecentreonphilanthropy.

The Community Day pairings were as follows: The National Museum of Bermuda with XL Group; BIOS with PricewaterhouseCoopers; BGA with ACE Group; BAMZ with Belco and Flagstone Re; Eliza Dolittle with Ariel Re; Somersfield Academy with Endurance Speciality Insurance Ltd.
