Tropical Storm Katia Forms In Atlantic
What was Tropical Depression 12 grew into Tropical Storm Katia early this morning [Aug.30].
The U.S National Hurricane Center said, “Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph…65 km/h…with higher gusts.”
“Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Katia is expected to be near hurricane intensity by late Wednesday or early Thursday.”
The Bermuda Weather Service said Katia is not a threat to the island at this time, and the closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 1208 nm to the south-east at 6am on Friday Sep 2, 2011.
The storm’s name replaces Katrina in the rotating roster.
