Police Advisory: Scam Email

September 28, 2011

The Police have issued yet another advisory about scam emails, it follows in full below:

Once again the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant regarding phishing e-mails and other scams that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.

Currently an e-mail is circulating, allegedly from the “London 2012 Olympic Organizing Committee”. The e-mail claims that the recipient’s e-mail address was attached to a winning lottery ticket, resulting in a prize of £2 million.

The e-mail states that in order to claim the money the recipient must disclose their personal information such as their name, occupation, home and e-mail addresses, telephone number and passport number.

Residents should ignore these unsolicited messages or similar ‘official looking e-mails’ claiming to offer prize money by requiring the recipient’s personal information.

Anyone who may have been affected by this scam is encouraged to contact the Financial Crime Unit on 295-0011.
