PGA Grand Slam To Allow Phones

October 12, 2011

The 29th PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Oct. 17-19, in Bermuda at Port Royal Golf Course, will allow spectators to carry and use mobile devices in select areas on the golf course.

The integration of mobile devices to enhance the golf spectator experience has been conducted at select PGA of America events since May 2011. Spectators at Port Royal Golf Course will be asked to set their phone to “silence” or “vibrate” while on the course.

In addition, there will be other guidelines that spectators will be asked to follow, including: no calls will be permitted on the hole contestants are playing; no video recording permitted at any time; photographs will be permitted on Monday only; and data use (texting, emailing) will be permitted anywhere on-site providing contestants are not about to play a shot (i.e. addressing the ball and hitting).

Spectators attempting to use their mobile device for photography during Championship rounds or video recording at any time will be asked to surrender the device and pick it up at a designated location after they depart the golf course.

An all-rookie field – Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy and Open Champion Darren Clarke, both from Northern Ireland, and from the United States, PGA Champion Keegan Bradley, will form the elite foursome in this year’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Tickets for the 29th PGA Grand Slam of Golf may be purchased in Bermuda at the Port Royal Golf Shop or via telephone by dialing 1-800-PGA-GOLF (800-742-4653), or 561-624-7601, or by visiting www.pgagrandslamofgolf.com.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, the season-ending showcase event that boasts the most difficult qualification requirement in the game – a major championship – will be televised by TNT to a worldwide audience.

What an absolute stupid ruling to prevent people from using their mobile device for photography …I was at the PGA Championships in Georgia this year, a darn Major and was able to use my mobile device for photography and it was a full field of PGA professionals and the tournament was run by the PGA of America the same folks who run the Grand Slam….

This is similar to being harassed at the baggage claim section at the airport upon arrival when using a mobile device to send a text message…

Simply bizarre to implement restrictions that could keep a few people from attending…

Tiger Woods was almost assaulted by a hot dog thrown by a patron on a golf course earlier this week…they’ll be banning fast food next…

Simply because the phones make noise when taking a picture which can be distracting, that’s all. If that prevents you from coming to a great event, especially this field of players then stay home and watch the soaps! The rest of us will be at PR enjoying the tournament.
