Day #1: Bermuda Thanksgiving Classic
The first day of the 2011 Bermuda Thanksgiving Basketball Classic tipped off inside the Berkeley Institute Gymnasium last night [Nov.24].
This tournament was started in 2010 by the tournament director and back-to-back, three-time basketball gold medalist in the Small Island Games tournament; Chris Crumpler. The aim for this tournament is for Bermuda’s young talented athletes to improve their skills, their basketball knowledge and gain as much international exposure as possible.
Last year, this tournament took place over two days. As there was an overwhelming attendance in 2010, Mr. Crumpler has decided to add an extra day for these young men to showcase their talents. This year, the classic will feature Georgetown District High School, Canada; Northwood High, Louisiana; Boca Raton Christian High, Florida; and Bermuda High School Select, Bermuda.
The Bermuda High School Select team is lead by Coach Tim Trott and his experienced coaching staff Kent Tacklyn and Ralph Scott. The Bermuda team includes Juron Tucker, Khaivon Castro, Rashon Tankard, Josh Liyange, Jordan Rego, Lucas Barbey, Karim O’Conner, Phillip Burgess, Donovan Livingston, Anthony Furbert, Troy Fox Jr., Jahkil Perinchief and Daniel Heintzman.
The event is sponsored by Digicel. Wayne Caines, CEO of Digicel Bermuda, stated, “Digicel has definitely taken notice of the attention basketball is receiving from the younger generation and is deeply committed to investing in to our sporting community. We are proud to assist Mr. Crumpler and his team with sharing their knowledge of the game. Sports not only assist with skill development, but they help build commitment, composure and leadership both on and off the court.”
