Forum: Police Stop & Search Powers

November 27, 2011

The Centre for Justice is hosting its first public forum on “The Balance between Public Safety and Liberty: Police Stop and Search Powers”.

A spokesperson said, “We have been reviewing the legislation in relation to police stop and search powers which, as a result of the increase in gang and gun violence over the past few years, have been enhanced.

“We recognize that the increase in gang and gun violence must be properly addressed, but it is critically important that law enforcement practices adopted in the context of gang and gun violence must conform to our constitutional rights.

“We believe that gang and gun violence is a social dilemma, and law enforcement is only one aspect of this issue. We are, therefore, hosting a public forum in order that the community may participate in how we can balance two important objectives, that is public safety and the preservation of human rights standards.

“Our panelists will provide diverse views and offer different perspectives on public safety, police powers and constitutional rights.”

The panelists are Minister for National Security Wayne Perinchief, Acting Police Commissioner Michael Jackman, Peter Martin, Larry Mussenden, Cordell Riley and Youth on the Move’s Carlton Simmons with Rick Richardson moderating.

The forum will be held at St. Paul’s AME Church Hall [corner of Victoria and Court Street] on Wednesday 30th November 2011 between 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Light refreshments will be served at 5:30pm.

The cops’ random searches of our youth does nothing to curtail gun crime, IMHO. All it does is add more boys to the US Stoplist.

More CCTV cameras and a jail in Cuba might help. Bermuda’s jail is just free rehab and free vocational education.

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

They can stop & search me anytime & my vehicle is used by four people, ywo of them young adults. I don’t check it after their use.

If you are not guilty of anything, whats the problem? The cops are trying to do their job.
