City-Wide Tree Planting To Start

The City of Hamilton today [Dec.8] announced the start of a city-wide tree planting and rejuvenation program, which will see various trees planted – including fruit trees which can be picked and enjoyed by members of the public once ripe.

Chief Operating Officer and Secretary for the City of Hamilton, Mr. Edward Benevides, said, “The city-wide tree planting and rejuvenation program has been in the planning stage for a few years.

“We have put a schedule in place, identified areas that need trees added and locations where trees have to be replaced. City horticulturalists planted and nurtured saplings that are now ready to be transferred.

“The process includes taking out trees that have become overgrown or may be diseased and replacing them with young trees that are ideal for the location.”

Mr. Benevides added, “We are particularly pleased with the tree nursery we will develop in Jubilee Park on Parson’s Road. This public park is an area we have identified as an ideal location to plant, grow and develop trees and will serve two purposes; more greenery will be added to the area and it is a perfect location to grow and develop saplings.

“Over time we will also introduce fruit trees to city parks. The fruit, once ripe, can be picked and enjoyed by
members of the public.”

Mr. Benevides concluded, “As we put in the young trees, motorists will notice the trees will be protected by tree guards. This will ensure that car doors don’t accidentally damage the growing tree.

“We will ask car drivers and passengers to use caution as they park and exit their vehicles, so as not to damage their automobiles or the trees. It is anticipated the entire tree planting and rejuvenation program will take several months to complete. We will keep the public informed of our progress.”
