Tucker Named NJCAA All-American
The US National Junior College Athletic Association [NJCAA] announced recently that Darton College Bermudian student-athlete Troy Tucker is a 1st-Team All-America member for the 2010-2011 men’s soccer season.
Mr. Tucker, who is now the programme’s first freshman to earn All-America honors, was so focused on pushing his team to a national championship he apparently didn’t realise that he was putting himself in a position to receive the prized athletic award.
“… I didn’t really know what it was,” he laughed. “I just knew it was something good.”
As a defensive midfielder, Mr. Tucker scored six goals including an equaliser that tied his team for third place with Tyler Community College at the 2011 NJCAA Soccer Championships in Phoenix. The Smith’s Parish resident was also named 1st Team All Region XVII.
Colleges from as far away as Detroit are already after Mr. Tucker, who said the only decision he’s made so far regarding his eventual transfer is to stay another year at Darton College.
An NJCAA spokesman said Mr. Tucker was a “great guy”, calling him an excellent representative “of the Darton College soccer programme and the institution.”
The Darton College men’s soccer team finished 3rd in the NJCAA in 2011. The program won the Southeast District Championship and Region XVII Championship to clinch its second consecutive NJCAA Championship Tournament berth.
