Video: Bermuda National Gallery Exhibit
In its current exhibition “Re-Interpreting The European Collection,” the Bermuda National Gallery [BNG] asked eight local and international artists to recreate a historical artwork of choice according to their own modern cultural influences.
The results by artists James Cooper, Louisa Flannery, Charlie Godet Thomas,Titus Kaphar, Sunell Lombard, Lynn Morrell, Alan C. Smith and Sharon Wilson are on display at the City Hally gallery until May 31.
“By reinterpreting the artwork in the contemporary moment, these artists provide another layer of meaning to the original pieces: they bring their own histories and perspectives to historical artworks that may well be far removed from their pasts,” said a BNG spokesman. “These new artworks shape a new context for dialogue, using symbols and technology, for example, to comment on today’s society.”
