One of the Department’s requirements was to identify some small maintenance tasks within our list of daily works for the applicants from the Department of Labour & Training’s list of registered clients to take over. The Initiative’s Team painted the exterior of several Post Offices buildings, and also painted the majority of the General Post Office Wall and Pillar Boxes found throughout the island.

Minister Scott’s full statement follows below:

Good Morning,

I am delighted to join my colleague, the Hon. Patrice K. Minors, MP, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, in bringing to the public’s notice the success of the Small Job Works Programme, a jobs initiative which commenced in September 2011.

This initiative provided much needed employment opportunities for Bermudians looking for employment in the small business sector, particularly the able- bodied unemployed.

The Ministry of Government Estates and Information Services, specifically, the Department of Public Lands & Buildings remains wholly committed to the Small Job’s Initiative. The team has worked closely with the Ministry of Economy Trade & Industry to help form the proper format and structure required to ensure the success of the program.

One of the Department’s requirements was to identify some small maintenance tasks within our list of daily works for the successful applicants from the Department of Labour & Training’s list of registered clients to take over.

By working with the General Post Office and their Facilities Manager, Mr. Sheridan Ming, the Initiative’s Team painted the exterior of several Post Offices buildings including the following:

  • Mangrove Bay Post Office
  • Somerset Bridge Post Office
  • Southampton Post Office
  • Devonshire Post Office
  • Flatt’s Post Office
  • Harrington Sound Post Office
  • Crawl Post Office
  • Bailey’s Bay Post Office

The participants of the program also painted the majority of the General Post Office Wall and Pillar Boxes found throughout the island. These boxes required the removal the rust from the surface and then painting the exterior.

There are Wall Boxes located between Mangrove Bay Road in Somerset; next to Somerset Country Squire and Cut Road, St George’s (between Redcoat Lane and Floral Lane). And Pillar Boxes located as far West as the Clock Tower entrance to Clock Tower Mall in Dockyard and at the entrance to Emily’s Bay Lane off of St. David’s Road in the East.

Another Departmental goal within the program was to address some general works at some of the Bermuda Government’s facilities across the island. The program successfully carried out some minor works at the St David’s Pre School in the East and cleaning up around the Sea Cadet’s Building in Somerset.

The success of this initiative has had the important output measure of identifying suitable employment for unemployed Bermudians and this addresses the Government’s stated national aim of Job Creation for those presently unemployed.

In concluding my remarks, can I say how very pleased I am to have been associated with this joint Ministry initiative, whose focus has been on the important objective of putting our people back to work.

Government will continue to generate short-term and long-term employment opportunities for Government buildings that may need a variety of maintenance or upgrade requirements and other repair work for buildings around the island.

Thank you
