BLTA’s Inter-School Tournament
The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association’s [BLTA] Inter-school tournament took place last week at the W. E. R. Joell Tennis Stadium. The inter-school tournament is part of the BLTA’s schools programme that has been sponsored by the ACE Group since 2000.
The schools participating in the Middle School Division tournament are: Bermuda High School, Clearwater Middle School, Dellwood Middle School, Mount St. Agnes, Saltus Grammar School, Sandy’s Secondary Middle School, Warwick Academy, Whitney Institute Middle School, and TN Tatem Middle School.
Representatives from ACE’s sponsorship committee attended the annual event to observe the students achievements.
“ACE is delighted to continue its support of such a rewarding initiative that brings the sport of tennis to school children across Bermuda. It is gratifying to know that after 12 years the programme is still going strong and that it is producing successful young Bermudian tennis players, said Samantha Froud, Chief Administration Officer, ACE Group in Bermuda.
“We commend the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association’s President, Coleridge Place, school coordinators Brent Smith and Tara Lambert; and the many tennis coaches and PE teachers for their commitment to the program and their dedication to developing Bermuda’s players of the future”.
The BLTA’s President, Coleridge Place said, “I am proud of the many Bermudian students who were able to take advantage of scholarships at overseas tennis academies and/or universities. The schools programme enabled these students to hone their tennis skills.
“These are some of the students who are currently overseas who participated and benefited from the programme: Zaire Simmons, Niam Azar, Neal Towlson, Cayla Cross, and Caitlin Gordon. These are some of the students who played college tennis and have progressed in their chosen careers: David Thomas, Tara Lambert, Zara DeSilva, Gavin Manders, and Sasha Fisher. We wish them all continued success.”
The schools programme, organised by the BLTA runs throughout the school year in Bermuda’s primary, middle and high schools. The programme encourages students of all ages to participate in tennis on a recreational and competitive level, not only in their regular PE lessons, but also through the inter-school tournaments.
ACE’s sponsorship enables the BLTA to appoint qualified tennis coaches to work within the school system with PE teachers, and provide inter-school tournaments three times per year.
