OBA: ‘Lot Of Overlap With Committees’

March 7, 2012

Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier and UBP MP Kim Swan have both commented on the National Security Council, with Mr Cannonier noting “there appears to be a lot of overlap with these committees” as there are at least three committees on which the Governor and Government ministers sit to discuss national security issues.

Yesterday [Mar.6] Government House said a National Security Council will be established, and will consist of the Governor, Deputy Governor, Premier, Deputy Premier, Attorney General, National Security Minister, Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment and one other Minister [or Junior Minister] to be nominated by the Premier.

Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier said, “The OBA will support any re-organization that strengthens the safety and security of the people of Bermuda.

“The formation of the National Security Council (NSC) makes for at least three committees on which the Governor and Government ministers sit to discuss national security issues – the new NSC, the Governor’s Council, through which the Governor already consults regularly with the Government, and the Security Committee, which meets in the event of a state of emergency.

“Then there is the Intelligence Committee, which is made up of the Police, Government House, and Government officials. There appears to be a lot of overlap with these committees and so we invite the Governor and/or the Government to explain how they will work together, and whether any organizational streamlining is planned,” concluded Mr Cannonier.

UBP Interim Leader Kim Swan said, “The United Bermuda Party consider the establishment of a National Security Council to make imminent good sense for Bermuda.

“From my tenure as Opposition Leader, I am well aware of the some of the sensitive challenges navigating policy and funding for the Bermuda Police Service.

“We feel that this mechanism can balance the role of the Government – to provide funding for the Police, with the constitutional responsibility of the Governor – for the provision of Bermuda’s internal security.

“In our reply to the Budget we stated that National Security is the number one issue confronting Bermuda and that it transcends politics. We see the establishment of this Council as a good mechanism to get the Leadership of National Security focussed and on the same page for the betterment of Bermuda .

“We look forward to the National Security Council working successfully with the leadership of the Bermuda Police Service to make Bermuda a peaceful and tranquil country,” concluded Mr Swan.

Mr. Cannonier and the OBA/UBP need to take their fight up with Government House. I hope he’s written a letter to His Excenllency because it makes no sense to send a press release to the media.

  2. jt says:

Where else would you send a press release?

  3. K-m Swan MP says:

@ Ms. Furbert, this is what the UBP Statement reads as follows:- UBP Interim Leader Kim Swan said, “The United Bermuda Party consider the establishment of a National Security Council to make imminent good sense for Bermuda.

Hope this clarifies the matter from the UBP.

  4. Clinton J. A. Paynter OBA Affiliated says:

When I heard this on the news last night my first thought was doesn’t the Governor already meet with the Premier, Police Commissioner etc. on a somewhat regular basis? I put it down to electioneering. Cousin Kim… Didn’t you read the memo from Alaska Hall? The prime directive is for all PLP agents to mention the OBA/UBP as often and in as many places as possible in hopes that it will stick in the peoples minds. Politricks 101.

  5. Hmmmmm says:

    “Interim Leader” ? Huh?

  6. Cancer says:

Be like OBAma. Keep hope alive and vote OBA !

  7. K-m Swan MP says:

@ Clinton Paynter, Cousin Clinton, I try hard not to make comments to disrespect persons or malign their integrity. In this regard, I take exception to your comments as my positions come from years of fighting for the issues of all people irrespective of their political allegiance or otherwise. I try to put balance and fairness ahead of partisan rhetoric. Above I will be respectful even to my detractors even if others may feel they are undeserving of it – I learned that from the example of the great teacher and persons from all walks of life, political persuassion and backgrounds.
Clinton, as you are entering politics and seem keen to advance the feeling of your Party at any cost let me respectfully advise you that your disrespectful comments do not address the content of my statement. Learn to criticise the message and refrain from attempting to malign the messenger.

    Respectfully Submitted,
    Kim Swan MP

Kim, you just did the opposite of what you just preached. You ultimmately attacked the messenger. You could have criticised the message, but chose to criticise the messenger. You infact didn’t even address the message. Practice your own preaching. I fully expect to not be attacked, maligned or criticised in your response.

    • Specialgirl4You says:

It is impossible for those bloggers like Clinton, Cancer, HMMMMM and other UBP/OBA fans to understand the position of “Learn to criticize the message and refrain from attempting to malign the messenger”. They do this daily, hide in Cyber-Space lynching at people like big COWARDS. So easy to hide under their Cyber- hoods crying out wolf. Clinton, need not enter politics, as he is not capable of being a good MP. One would have thought that Clinton would encourage his fans to raise the level of debate.

      • Hmmmm says:

Special Girl you lie and try to brainwash folks with your schoolyard proaganda. You have been caught spouting lies to hide the truth on a number of occassions. Nobody is being lynched except for the people of Bermuda and the rope being used by you is your propaganda and hate messages. Ultimately it is you who are the coward, as you are too scared to face reality and admit you and your other PLP cohorts are doing a terrible job.

        • Hmmmm says:

PS I am a fan of no political party. I am not a member of any political party. I am an independent person who will not cage their opinion in order to fall in line with a parties approach. When I see it is wrong, I’ll say it is wrong and why.

  8. Trident says:

Keep hope alive by voting obaubp? funny.

    • Hmmmm says:

Totally Ridiculous Inaccurate Dillusional Empty Narrow-minded Typing i.e. A MISS Isle

  9. Cancer says:

Yep… cuz their certainly no hope left with PLP that’s for sure. Don’t you see the conditon of this island?? Keep hope alive like OBAama – vote OBA !

  10. Specialgirl4You says:

Clinton, the reality is there is little or no difference between the OBA/UBP or the UBP/OBA….what is this a difficult pill for you to swallow?

    • Hmmmm says:

Special girl, you have been proven to be a liar already on these blogs. The OBA and UBP are very different. Sadly the fact we are all very concerned about is that the PLP are failing Bermuda on a regular basis, yet you still bang their drum like a brainwashed fool. Please for all of our sakes wake up and see what is happening. The PLP won’t be gone if they lose the election, they will be reborn, with more current relevant directives. They will have learned from their mistakes and be all the better for it. They cannot do this whilst still in power and with the current party structure and positioning. Too long in power is not a good thing for any political party.

  11. Cancer says:

Hmmmmm thanks for saying exactly everything I would have said. If you really look at specialgirls dialogue she once again has attacked the messengers. As a blind loyalist for the PLP she is very confused and cannot see what’s right in front of her. Heres to wishing she would take her blinders off and practice what she preaches

  12. Cancer says:

Oh no are you saying special girl really is “SPECIAL”? talk about someone hiding… Lol

    • YES MATE! says:

Is it just me or does it sound like Spashulneedsgirl was taught to speak by Chris Furbert? They both do an excellent job of mangling the English language (lynching at). Come to think of it Rhonda sounds like Chris and Spashulneedsgurl as well.

  13. Kim Swan MP says:

@Hmmmm, as a person who post as a fictious name I encourage you to to have the courage of you conviction and have dialogue from behind the veil of hidden identity you write.

With regards to my post addressing Clinton Paynter, it was in response to him misrepresenting me and putting the record straight. I admittedly offered him advice from the benefit of my experience, because he is courageous enough to speak out and put his name to his comments like me when I was his age……….. One thing is that I truly care about him as my Love for him as a member of our family WILL NOT change because of our political differences, as he will always be a member of my family.

    Respectfully,
    Kim Swan MP

    • Be For Real says:

Mr Swan don’t waste your time. The OBA supporters should address you as General Kim anyway as you were head of their delegation. What type of disrespect are they now showing you? A Sad Day In Bermuda!

Kim Swan You Still Get My Vote!

    • Hmmmm says:

      Kim,
Ya did it again, attacked the messenger, i.e. me.

I’m not doubting your love for your family member, but it would have been more professional to have shared your personal advice through a private conversation don’t you think.
