Carifta Underway, Bermuda Swimmers Make Finals

April 12, 2012

All nine Bermuda swimmers hit the pool this morning [Apr.12] as the 2012 Carifta Swimming Games got underway in Nassau, Bahamas.

First up was the 50 backstroke with Maddie Moore dropping 2 seconds and qualifying for the finals in 8th place. Ashley Yearwood and Benedict Parfit both had fast morning swims and were also able to make it into tonight’s finals. Shannon Hassell was able to lower her time by a second and qualify for the finals in 3rd place.

Jesse Washington started off his busy meet by taking 2 seconds off his best time, qualifying second for the finals and setting the new age group record. Jesse came back even stronger in the 100 fly where he dropped 2 seconds from his best time to set a new record and to be the top seed for tonight’s finals.

Ben Smith, National Swim Coach for Bermuda, said: “After a good rest we hope to see some great results from tonight’s finals. We can expect to see our past medal winners performing at a high level and we are looking forward to see how all the new faces will react to such a fast competition.

“The atmosphere at past Carifta’s has been electric and it is always exciting to see how athletes react to the pressure of the big stage. Success with this team will be based on personal best times and what they can learn by competing against the best swimmers in our region.”
