Subtropical Storm Beryl Forms In The Atlantic
The 2012 Atlantic hurricane season officially starts on June 1st, however Subtropical Storm Beryl made an early appearance forming late last night [May 25] in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.
In their 6am update today, the Bermuda Weather Service said that Beryl is not a threat to Bermuda at this time, and its closest point of approach to Bermuda has already passed. It is presently located 547 nautical miles to the west of Bermuda.
The storm is expected to impact the U.S East Coast, and forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for parts of the Southeastern U.S. coast.
Beryl had top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and was in the Atlantic about 305 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, the Miami-based center said.
Beryl is the second named storm of the season, following after Tropical Storm Alberto which formed on May 19th. This is the first year on record that a tropical storm has formed in both the Atlantic and Pacific before the official start of their respective seasons, as the Pacific also experienced a pre-season storm with Tropical Storm Aletta forming in the a day before the season’s May 15th start date.
