Upcoming: ‘Live Free’ Football Tournament
In remembrance of murder victim Jason Smith, the Live Free Group is holding a 7-Aside Football Tournament on June 30th 2012, with the finals to be played on the Family Fun Day, July 7th 2012.
A statement from the group said, “The Live Free Group came into existence after the murder of Jason Smith on May 1st 2011, in what the police believe to be a case of mistaken identity. He had no gang affiliations, but was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“The group is made up of some of Jason’s closest friends, and we created this group not just as his friends, but as his family.
“We know that “Live Free” will have a personal meaning to each individual; however, our aim is to encourage and promote positive social environments and build community and family relationships!
“It is our long term goal to have a multiservice facility that will enable us to meet individual and family needs within the community.
“Jason had a passion for football. He was the striker for the Pembroke Hamilton Club and spent a period of time representing and traveling with the National Squad. He was an avid team player both on and off the field.
“In remembrance of him, the Live Free Group is holding a 7-Aside Football Tournament on June 30th 2012 with the Finals to be played on the Family Fun Day, July 7th 2012. The event will take place at Saltus Field. This football tournament encompasses the whole purpose Live Free was created, to honor Jason’s memory, celebrate his life and ensure his legacy lives on.
“The purpose of our events is to raise money to assist local charities and our scholarship award at Saltus. The charity we’ve chosen to sponsor is Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
