Bermuda U/19 Rugby Team Win In Mexico
The Bermuda Under 19 team stormed to a 59-6 win over the Mexico Aztecs in their second game of the North American Caribbean Rugby Association [NACRA] Under 19 Tournament under very hot conditions in Mexico.
The opening try came off a well-executed backrow move off of a scrum on the Aztecs 22 yard line which sucked in the Aztec defenders thus allowing a quick ball to be played out to an on charging full back David Lunn who went over in the corner and with the conversion missed Bermuda led 5 – 0.
Bermuda remained on the offensive with another driving maul from the base of the scrum which was pulled down by the Aztecs leading to a penalty which Lunn kicked making the score 8-0.
The Aztecs continued to struggle to defend Bermuda who continue to tick over the scoreboard with another well converted penalty by Lunn making the score 11-0.
Bermuda scored again when the ever present Lunn wisely off loaded to the supporting Tristan Kermode for the 2nd Try of the day for Bermuda which Lunn converted making it 18-0.
Another catch and drive from the lineout worked well with Ngarryan Darrell breaking from the back of the drive 5 yards off the Aztec line and scoring the 3rd Try under the post untouched, the conversion was made by Lunn extending Bermuda’s lead to 25-0.
Minutes later the Aztecs got on the scoreboard with a penalty making the score 25-3. The dominating Bermuda back line took the restart kick 55 yards allowing the ever present tight head prop Jabari Robinson to rumble over from 5 yards out for Bermuda’s 4th Try, however the conversion went wide making the halftime score 30-3.
Flanker Lliam Nash was next on the score board after picking and going off a ruck close to the Aztec line for Bermuda’s 5th Try of the game, Lunn’s conversion extended the lead. The Aztecs got a second penalty moving the score board to 37-6, before Lunn produced his second Try of the match and 6th Bermuda Try of the game when he scored as a result of a well taken quick penalty by the captain and Dylan O’Kelley-Lynch, Lunn’s conversion attempt was not made leaving the score at 42-6.
Next up to score was Matt Thompson who scored the 7th Try and with the conversion good it put Bermuda ahead 49-6. The hard working O’Kelley-Lynch was up next to score with a 70 yard run from the kick off to score under the post with the conversion made by Lunn Bermuda held a 56-6 lead.
The pinnacle moment of the match came when veteran lock, Eddie DeSilva struck a drop goal from the back of a Bermuda scrum, making the final score 59 – 6. Bermuda now wait to see what happens in the final match of the pool between Trinidad and Tobago and the Aztecs to find out who they play on Finals day.
