First BMA Graduate Trainees Complete Programme

July 26, 2012

The Bermuda Monetary Authority announced that its first two graduate trainees, Treasa Walker and Vashun Blanchette, have successfully completed the Authority’s three-year Graduate Training Programme [GTP].

Authority CEO, Jeremy Cox said, “It is with great pleasure that we today mark Vashun and Treasa’s success as our first GTP graduates and the beginning of the next stage of their careers at the Authority.”

“The outstanding qualities of these two young Bermudians have been readily apparent over the last three years, including during their external secondments locally at HSBC Bermuda and Conyers Dill & Pearman and overseas at the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) in Switzerland and in Hiscox UK in London. We thank these industry partners for their support for the programme and the graduates.”

“In order for Bermuda to continue having first league regulation, we also need to have knowledgeable Bermudian regulators,” Mr. Cox said. “This is what we were trying to achieve when we started the GTP back in 2008. The GTP – along with robust recruitment and succession – is helping the Authority toward achieving this goal.”

Mesheiah Crockwell, Head of Human Resources at the Authority said: “A significant level of commitment is required to successfully complete the GTP. I wish to publically acknowledge that of Vashun and Treasa, as well as the four other Graduate Trainees currently in the Programme: Terry Lynn Griffiths, Jelani Scott, Alisha Phillips and Tiffany Austin.”

Dr. Sebastian von Dahlen, Principal Administrator, of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Secretariat in Basel, Switzerland said, “First of all we would like to thank the Authority for sending Mr. Blanchette to work at the Secretariat of the IAIS…Mr. Blanchette has proven to be a valuable addition to the Secretariat’s team as evidenced by the fact that we requested an extension of his secondment.

“He has worked in close collaboration with me in projects relating to the analysis of the global insurance and reinsurance sector which have included the following: Weekly Market Development Report; Reinsurance and Financial Stability paper; Insurance Captive paper and Global Insurance Market Report. He also provided valuable contributions to some international meetings.

“Last but not least, Vashun has put forward many good ideas and helpful suggestions that have supported the team in achieving successful outcomes,” Dr. von Dahlen said. “In concluding, we would like to sincerely wish Vashun every success in his further professional development!”

Christopher Brown, Head of Compliance, HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited said: “HSBC were pleased to host Vashun during his BMA graduate development programme. During his time with us, we trust he gained direct insight and experience into the governance, management and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures in the areas of Internal Controls, Compliance and Credit. We hope that this experience has provided a solid foundation on which to perform his ongoing regulatory duties.”

Christina Herzog, HR Manager for Hiscox Bermuda said, “The long term success of the BMA and the promotion of developing Bermudians are both of great interest to Hiscox. So when the Authority approached us about participating in this initiative, we jumped at the opportunity.

“Treasa’s secondment took her to our London office where she obtained insight and experience in the world of compliance and risk as it pertains to Hiscox. She performed very well; there were times she had to operate in the unknown, however, she came to task, adapting as needed with a ‘can do’ attitude. Treasa – on behalf of the Hiscox family, congratulations on your graduation. We wish you the very best.”
