Car Overturns, Hits BELCO Pole, Woman Injured

August 15, 2012

[Updated] Emergency services responded to an accident at 2.30am this morning [Aug 15] on North Shore Road near the junction of Radnor Road, which saw a car driver strike a BELCO pole and cause a brief electrical outage in the area.

The car was being driven along North Shore Road when it was in a collision with a BELCO pole and overturned. Emergency service personnel attended to an injured female, understood to be the driver, before she was transported to King Edward Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Traffic was diverted away from the area until Quik Response Towing righted the overturned vehicle and removed it from the scene. The collision appeared to have damaged the utility pole, and BELCO trucks were seen working in the nearby area.

The road was re-opened to traffic shortly after 4:00am. The woman’s injuries are unknown as details are limited, however we will update with official information as able.

Update 8am: Video added below, the sound fades in and out as we had some tech issues. Sorry!

Update 12.12pm: A police spokesperson said: “Police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision that happened this morning around 2:30am on North Shore Road near the junction of Radnor Road.

  1. Nonsense says:

These extreme incidents are happening wayy too often. Something has got to give!
I pray for her safety and recovery!

  2. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

These darned Belco poles are a danger to the public. If all the Belco poles were removed, this sort of thing wouldn’t happen!

    • swing voter says:

hahahaha why not include all of the stone walls that get in the way, or the damn pesky 4×4 wooden barriers that W&E erect…..yeah they all get in our way and cause accidents!

    • terry says:

Took the words out of my mouth.
      Ban the poles.

  3. Johnny Boy says:

Lol, yeah. It was the Belco poles fault,,,it didn’t see me using my cellphone doing 60k.

  4. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

Not only Belco poles but walls too. Walls are so dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed. If Government got rid of all those walls then nothing like this would ever happen.

  5. NOT THROWING A STONE says:

Unless you know exactly what happened, you shouldn’t be throwing stones.

Why assume that this person was speeding or using their cellphone, who’s to say they didn’t have a medical issue that caused them to have this accident, or been extremely tired from working an extra shift at work.

We must all remember we ALL have family members/ friends that drive and ride on Bermuda roads.

So before THROWING YOUR STONES… sit back and think.

    • Concerned says:

I am praying the occupants of the car are doing okay but would suggest to everyone that feels ill or tired to pull over and call a family member or friend or 911 for assistance.

People have also to realize that accidents such as this and others will cause their insurance to go sky high along with expenses to other cars/property.

Be safe and be pro-life on the roads.

    • The Truth (Most Imitated) says:

@Not Throwing Stones…I totally agree people are famous for assuming everything without the proper info..A Bermudian pass time..

  6. Zombie Apolcalypse says:

Amazing how cars keep suddenly flipping and hitting poles when going along at 35k.

    • Eyes Wide Open says:

Nah…it’s the Frog Olympics. They sit on the road and wait for a nice, slow moving car to come over them and see who can flip the car the furthest with one single hop. That frog won the Gold bah!

  7. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

In fact if Government got rid of all the corners by making our roads straight, none of this would ever happen. Its as if Government just doesn’t care.

    • Come Correct says:

Lol if government got rid of every wall, pole, and fence we’de probably drive right off the rock.

      • turtle says:

total agree with you!!!!!! is not the poles or walls they are inocents…is the people who think can drive! and speed….in so small roads…..come on this is not a real highways !!!!!! to speed at 120 km/hr!!!!!!!

  8. “And the survey says” says:

Where are all the people that comment about the big cars are . . . for Bermuda’s roads.

    • Zombie Apolcalypse says:

Usually they look at the picture and blame the type of car. In this case I guess it would be: “Those small hatchbacks are inherently dangerous. They are only ever driven by crazy people who don’t need them. They should be banned”.

  9. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

Survey – yes big cars should be banned in Bermuda. But even some drivers of small cars still manage to hit things – mostly in the middle of the night. Perhaps people should learn how to drive before they – well DRIVE!

  10. rob says:

what are you talking about poles and cars for ??? Are you Blind ?? there is no inforcement of drink driving laws in Bermuda..even when people are taken to Hospital after a accident their not tested…the roads are small and the land is private so they can never be widen…they CAN be better lit and well paved but no…its a public investment and you dont pay taxes !! Wake up…Bermuda is another world … Indeed it is ..one thats almost lawless ::(

  11. well i never.... says:

only thing missing from the story is how fast the pole was travelling – those poles are CRAZY drivers…. i am sure it was the pole’s fault.

  12. Observer says:

Stop crashing your cars people! – The Quik Response crew want sleep too!

  13. its time says:

it is one of four things that could cause this accident

Inattention: doing something like texting, or on the phone
Tired: not getting enough rest, sometimes happens with people coming from work and they have had a long day and they fall assleep at the wheel.
    Speed: self explainitory
and the big one: driving under the influence.

I can assure you based on Bermuda, the time of the accident it was probably the latter.

  14. More with less says:

Momma always said nothing good ever happens after midnight…

  15. unreal says:

smh why do ppl always have to assume tht a person is speeding when an accident happens! she could have been avoiding something, a tire could have blown anything could have been the cause but of course as always the NEGATIVE bermudians always have to put in their two sense on what they assume happened smh!

  16. ella says:

By the way, what ever happened to the “not being on your cellphone while driving/riding” law. I see it every day and i am not exaggerating! This morning coming into work on court street this lady almost hit me on my bike while chatting on her cellphone. What is up Bermuda Police??

  17. Kim Smith says:

The headline is misleading… sounds like the car overturned first and then hit the BELCO pole.

Question: although this is probably treated as an ‘accident’, will the driver of this and similar crashes be charged with driving without due care and attention?

I certainly also hope the lady is okay.

  18. emperor of bermuda says:

Obviously another plot by the management and shareholders of BELCO to hold the country at ransom. How dare they put poles in direct path of cars, knowing full well people will lose power during accidents!

  19. Nothing New says:

I just hope she has learned her lesson .. Cause she could have hurt someone else..
