Bermuda Observing CARICOM Statistics Day
The Bermuda Department of Statistics will be joining CARICOM National Statistical Offices in observing Statistics Day today, Monday 15th October with the theme, “Working together to improve statistics in the 21st Century and Beyond.”
The Director of Statistics, Valerie Robinson-James said, “Statisticians are key players in gathering and formulating economic and social statistical information. They frame the demographic profiles in our society and produce the statistics that become the eyes of policy makers and the heart of the development process.”
She continued, “The Department of Statistics provides a wealth of information about Bermuda; who we are, where we live and what we do. Whether it is statistics focusing on the population of Bermuda, households, income earned, seniors, tourism, literacy levels, employment, economic growth, education, labour productivity or international business activity, the data collected and released provides a sound basis for informed decision-making regarding Bermuda’s society, economy and environment.
She added that the purpose of Statistics Day is to raise public awareness and highlight the importance of statistics in Bermuda.
In recognition of this, the Department of Statistics has planned activities to inform the public of the important role of the Department of Statistics in the community. A half-day workshop on “Conducting Surveys: From Start to Finish” will be held at the Department on Monday morning for a group of the Island’s senior high school students.
They will learn about how to design survey questionnaires, collect data from respondents, process, tabulate and graph data for written analysis. The students will be given examples of these aspects of survey design as carried out by the Department for the production of statistical publications such as the Consumer Price and Retail Sales Indexes, and, for their annual Economic Activity and Employment Surveys.
In addition an Information Booth will be set up on the ground floor of The Washington Mall from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Monday. The general public is invited to visit the booth and collect statistical information about the Department, flyers and publications produced by the Department.

while I recognize that statistics are helpful, the exercise has little importance if the gathered information is not used to progress; we are only window dressing instead of problem solving..yes, it has historical posterity ect.,however lots of statistics such as our birthrate( which has not gone up to 1% in the last more than decade),our black male education and pay scales have not changed and the ratio of imported workers has risen to a new high, so with all of the data collected how exactly has Bermuda/Bermudians learned and improved on those numbers or is it just an exercise in futility…Also are we still paying for CARICOM status while still claiming to be family. Can we really afford this..
