Movember Fundraiser Set To Get Underway
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre announce the beginning of growing season. Movember an event where men grow moustaches during the month of November, hence the portmanteau ‘Mo-vember’, raises money and awareness for men’s health and male cancers. The theme for 2012 is ‘Movember & Sons’, which recognizes that ‘Knowledge is Power’. The theme seeks to encourage all men to seek and share knowledge with loved ones, especially between father and son.
“The top men’s health issues in Bermuda include diabetes, heart disease and cancer” says Tara Soares, Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “The growth of a new Mo inspires conversations about these not often talked about topics.” The initiative provides a fun way for men to try out a new look for one month of the year, whilst supporting a worthwhile cause. It can provide quite a visual spectacle seeing so many moustaches suddenly sprout in offices, on the street, on the sports fields etc.
New for 2012, Bermuda will be embracing the MoSista. MoSistas play a vital role in Movember and men’s health. With the simple wink of an eye, small gesture of appreciation or encouraging words – MoSistas can influence men to participate and grow a Mo. As the new sponsor for Movember in Bermuda, Elbow Beach will celebrate the finest bounty – the moustache – by hosting this year’s Movember events and welcoming MoBros and MoSistas with a host of specials and prizes including The Spa which will be offering special treatments to help ease this itchy month.
November 1st 6-8pm Clean Start Shave Off party – registration will be open and upper lips will be pampered and shaved in preparation for a month of growing.
November 30th 6-8pm MoFinale – by attending the MoFinale, MoBros & MoSistas will have a chance to compete for a series of great category prizes including Man of Movember, Miss Movember, MoBros & MoSista, Team MoBro, Brushes with Fame, Best Mo in Character, The Lame Mo and the Ultimate Mo.
The ladies from the Cutting Room will once again be on hand at both events to give the men’s upper lip a professional start and finish to the growing season. Elbow Beach has provided a poolside cabana and the MoBros can relax in luxury while being pampered by the ladies of The Cutting Room.
“Movember Bermuda was launched in 2009 by two individuals who raised an impressive $46,000 for the hair on their upper lips” says Deborah Titterton Narraway, Marketing Coordinator at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “The movement has grown: in 2010 81 men became MoBros and raised over $68,000 and last year 162 MoBros: 56 individuals and 10 teams raised over $111,000.”
100% of the funds raised by MoBros and MoSistas support two important men’s health initiatives: a free public Health Screening Clinic giving uninsured men the opportunity to receive basic health screenings key to the early detection of diabetes, heart disease and cancer; the second programme is a Men’s Health Voucher which gives uninsured / under insured men the opportunity to see their own physician for an annual health check-up and to discuss their health history and risk factors.
