Summer Internships In Bermuda, London, USA

January 3, 2013

Applications are now open for the Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ Summer 2013 Intern Programmes aimed at giving any student who is considering a career in the insurance sector an understanding of the industry and the opportunities open to them.

Sixteen undergraduate or graduate students will be selected to spend two weeks immersed in the insurance industry either Bermuda, London, Chicago or Atlanta. This short time-frame means it is possible for students to get time off from their summer employment to participate. Although the internships are unpaid, BFIS covers all the costs and gives students a stipend.

In the words of one of last year’s participants, Devin Page studying for his Masters in Business and International Affairs at Georgia Institute of Technology, “The internship went incredibly well and exceeded all of our expectations. I personally have amassed a pile of 75 business cards, ranging from new underwriters to the CEO of companies. Everyone was so open and willing to share with us that we all learned more than you can imagine.”

The 2013 dates for the Bermuda programme is May 27 – June 7, London – June 3-14 and Chicago and Atlanta – July 8–19.

Cathy Lapsley, Executive Director of BFIS said, “If any student wants to come in and discuss the programme with us before they return to college, we would be delighted to meet with them. They just need to call 295-1266 to set up an appointment. The BFIS office is in the Cedarpark Centre in Hamilton across from the bus terminal.”

Applications are only accepted through www.bermudascholarships.com and the deadline is March 29, 2013.

Bermudians don’t know how lucky they are!! If English or American students were given two week internships in Bermuda, to fly out and get experience in the IB sector there would be uproar here that Bermudian students weren’t being put first. Has anyone seen the youth unemployment figures in the UK?

    • Clive Spate says:

      Agree!!

    • J says:

Some people just love to be negative… they love it. But guess what, this is already happening. Every year students come from abroad and either work in an internship position or they spend the week visiting major industry stakeholders, including related government departments. I know, because I am personally involved in this process. So please stop being so negative alllllll the time. There are only good things in this article, yet the very first comment sucks all the positivity out of the article.

      • Amazed says:

        Agreed!

      • Limey says:

It sucks all the positivity out of the article because what I stated was the truth. Yeah it’s brilliant that Bermudians get this fantastic opportunity, but as I said before, the other way round and there would be uproar. Don’t even bother trying to tell me that students from England and America fly to Bermuda for internships with IB, let alone to do shadowing or internships with the Bermudian government. In your dreams! Expat kids living on this island who I went to school with didn’t even get a sniff of internships, scholarships, shadowing jobs, etc. So don’t tell me students who have no affiliation with the island come here and do internships with IB and the Bermudian govt. If its true show me a website in America and/ England which offers experiences to do internships in Bermuda for non Bermudians

Requirements – have to be Bermudian or PRC status

I find it disgraceful that Americans and British students are inelligible to do internships in their own country!

          • Limey says:

*I find it disgraceful that American and British students are inelligible to do these internships that are occurring in their own country

            • Limey says:

On googling Bermuda Internships, the only available ones on the island available to non Bermudians is the Aquarium and BIOS, on clicking on IB internships that popped up, all required Bermudian status.

      • Clive Spate says:

The original post stated Bermudians don’t know how lucky they are. If you view being lucky to have these opportunities as a negative thing then you’ve kind of proved his point.

    • Smh says:

The UK population for 2011 was 62,641,000. Bermuda’s was 64,700. How can you sit here and compare the two? Obviously UK is much higher. DUH! Geesh. And the unemployed UK people have many financial benefits to choose from and do not tell me otherwise because I go school out here and many of the people that use them are just tearing it and ruining it for the people that need it. They also have many opportunities within the universities to do placements in parts of the world, and some companies in Bermuda offer them for international students. So before you start typing your statements get your facts straight.

      • Limey says:

My facts are straight, besides BIOS and the Aquarium, there are no companies, businesses, govt departments on the island that offer internships to non bermudian international students. FACT.
My original points are that Bermudians dont realise how lucky they are with being able to go to America and the UK for these internships. And that its disgraceful English and American students are ineligible to apply to internships occuring in their own country.
And lastly Bermudians would be in uproar if the shoe was on the other foot.
And your point regarding UK unemployment, disability benefits, etc, yes, they are being abused. I wonder how many fellow Bermudians have flown to the UK to ‘sign on’?

        • truth says:

limey get a life. Yes we are lucky and what. go lay down with your anti- bermuda comments. or go home. simple as that

          • Limey says:

I have always loved People’s comments of ‘go home’, it shows there true colours, it’s shows that they can’t argue their point successfully or have run out of credible points to make for their argument.
@truth – it’s better to be assumed an iDiot, than open your mouth and remove all doubt!

        • ABM says:

What proof of these facts you are talking do you have? We need proof not just talk of facts. your facts seem more like opinions.

          • Limey says:

Truth – my comments aren’t anti Bermudian, your comment if anything raises the point I was trying to make that some people here aren’t exactly grateful for the opportunities they can get, or they have a sense of entitlement to these opportunities. Bermudas biggest problem is entitllement. If anything your comment of ‘go home’ is xenophobic. How would you feel if you were placed on one of these internships in the states or the UK and colleagues in the companies told you to ‘go back home’ and make you feel uncomfortable.

ABM – I googled Bermuda internships and looked at the results and clicked on the first 30 responses, two – BIOS and aquarium responded with non Bermudian internships, the other 28 e.g HSBC, Deloitte, ace, pwc etc required Bermudian or PRC status, FACT
The only reason I did this is because I asked ‘J’ above to show proof to his comment – ‘Every year students come from abroad and either work in an internship position or they spend the week visiting major industry stakeholders, including related government departments. I know, because I am personally involved in this process’ I’m still waiting for a response!

        • Smh says:

This programme is specifically for Bermudians. However, if students from other parts of the world desire to study in Bermuda they need to reach out to the companies themselves and ask if they offer them. I had to do that when I applied to internships in America. Just because they do not advertise it does not mean that they do not offer it! So hush and take your bias opinions elsewhere.

  2. Honest says:

I participated in this internship, and it was awesome! I encourage any student interested in insurance to apply.
