Armed Robbery Sentence Reduced On Appeal
The Court of Appeal has ruled that the 16 year sentence handed down to Jaron Roberts was “disproportionate” and reduced it to 11 years.
Roberts was convicted of using an imitation firearm to commit a string of robberies which occurred in various parishes including Pembroke, Warwick, and Paget in March 2011. Motorcyclists were accosted and robbed by Roberts and an accomplice.
The Court of Appeal indicated a new sentence of “six years for the robberies and attempted robberies and a consecutive sentence of five years imprisonment for the firearm offences.”
In their judgment, the tribunal noted that at the time of the offences, “the appellant was twenty years old… and was never in trouble with the law”.

“the appellant was twenty years old… and was never in trouble with the law”…..People that are not troublemakers just don’t wake up one morning and say “hey, I think I’ll take a fake gun and rob some people today”. The only thing that “was never in trouble with the law” means is that he never got caught before doing what SURELY he was doing all along!
I agree, and what these judges, lawyers and anyone that has NOT been the victim of an armed robbery FAILS TO UNDERSTAND, is that the psycological damage that someone goes through when they have a gun pointed at them or a family member is the same! By the time he or she finds out in court that the gun was not real, the psycological damage has been done! The nightmares the loss of sleep, the crying, the fear, loss of weight, therapy, medication… does not go away!!!!!
Isn’t their gift from the courts enough!- They already are gifted with the fact that they can get out on parole after serving 1/3 of their sentance!!!!!
Just when you think the Judges here finally got one correct – the turn around and disappoint!
I guess we will have to wait until one of these CRIMINALS point a fake gun or robs a Judge and / or their family members. Then, maybe they will understand that the crime isn’t just about the weapon, its about thevictim too!!!! Maybe then things will change and they will get tough on crime!
This is yet another example of where the Government needs to toughen the laws. If you have a firearm or even an imitation firearm there should be a mandatory sentence of 15 years with no parole. If you use that firearm or imitation firearm to commit any crime that should be another 10 years or more added on to your sentence which should run consecutively. Once the laws are in place this would prevent the court of appeal from overturning a judges sentencing ruling.
Exactly – I agree, nobody buys a firerm to simply admire – real or fake! You buty one, borrow one or steal one to KILL, ROB and STEAL with. This guys was proof of that!
This guys actions affected more than the wallet of the victim. Until these d**** **s or heartless judges understand that, we won’t have true justice.
Why bother trying to apease the public by telling us that a armed robber is given 20 years in jail kowing that realistically after they only serve 1/3 of their sentance (6 years – 6 months) they can be out on the streets again.
Do the sentances given today FIT THE CRIMES! Not when you consider you can get time off for good behavior! Change the system! You rob someone – You get 15 years! If you behave, you get out in 15 years – if you don’t the parole board will add time and keep you there until you are FIT FOR SOCIETY. Until keep these punks in jail – so that my faily and our vistors can feel safe!
Fire the Appeal Court Judges, they are way past thier expiery date. We need dome younger bodies, Bermua is just a fat coe to these ancient geezers.
As a victim – I couldn’t agree with you more! I used to blame the police and the lawyers when I would hear about things like this. After being a victim, it is often apparent to me that the the Judges have become desensatized and don’t care or simply do not have a clue what the true impact is of a crime!
Fat Cow that is….
Judges need to get tough and met out such sentences that will teach these criminals a lesson! A victim of crime will carry that for life! Maybe if a judge is victim of crime things might change!
hold ya head bra!
keep ya head up!
