BNAA Hosting Championships On Fri & Sat
The Bermuda National Athletics Association [BNAA] will be hosting the 2013 Bermuda National Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday [June 14 + 15] at the National Sports Centre in Devonshire.
The event is scheduled to get started at 5.00pm on Friday with the opening ceremony and the first race due to go under the gun at 5.30pm. Saturday’s events are scheduled to start on the field at 3.00pm.
BNAA President Donna Watson said, “Unfortunately due to finances we have had to make this event more low key. Last year it was great having our Elite athletes home and competing plus other Elite US athletes coming here to compete against them. This made for a great event.
“Athletics struggles to get sponsorship for this event and has tried for numerous years with little success. Since we were unable to bring our athletes home they will compete in other meets over the weekend. Tre Houston will be competing in the championships. Either way we will have our focus on our young athletes this year as some of them are preparing for International competition.
“We have Kyrah Scraders, Taahirah Butterfield and Justin Donawa our Carifta athletes who are preparing for World Youth Championships and Kidane Callendar, Micaiah Robinson and Antonio Bailey who are just a few seconds away from reaching the standard.
“We have Shaquille Dill, Ashley Taylor-Bean, Allison Outerbridge who are preparing for the University Games and will be in action this weekend. Of course we have our athletes who are preparing for the Natwest Island Games hoping to put on a good show in front of Bermuda like Tamika Williams, Victoria Fiddick, Ashley Eastwanik, Rose-Anna Hoey, Jay Donawa, Stephen Allen. Of course we have several of our very young athletes who are preparing for their overseas events like East Coast and they are preparing for that also.
“All in all we are hoping for a good turn out for our Championships this year but are a bit disappointed as we had such a great International event last year and most of the International athletes who competed last year were really looking forward to competing again in Bermuda this year,” concluded Ms Watson.
