Students Cataloguing Bank’s Art Collection

Among the 28 students that The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited has hired for its Summer Student Programme are Courtney Clay and Lara Hetzel who are updating and automating the inventory of the Bank’s art collection.

Butterfield has an interesting collection of artwork, photographs and historic maps of Bermuda. The collection is periodically rotated and the development of an automated catalogue will facilitate the selection of pieces to be displayed.

Brendan McDonagh, Butterfield’s Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, explained, “Butterfield has been in business in Bermuda for 155 years. Over such a long period, the Bank has been fortunate to build a diverse collection of art including works by celebrated local artists like Sharon Wilson and Desmond Fountain. We also have some impressive pieces on loan to us from local families.”

Mr. McDonagh added, “There may be an opportunity for the Bank to rotate the display of the collection more frequently for our clients’ enjoyment. To do that effectively, we need a more up-to-date inventory system, and we’ve hired Bermudian students to create an automated solution for us. In the process, it’s my hope that the students will gain important business experience and broaden their knowledge and appreciation of art.”

Butterfield reached out to the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art to help it find summer students who would be a good fit for the project: passionate about art; technology savvy; and willing to spend their summer sorting, photographing and documenting paintings and prints.

Courtney just completed her International Baccalaureate studies at Warwick Academy and will be attending Istituto Marangoni in Italy in the fall. Lara recently graduated from the Bermuda High School for Girls with her International Baccalaureate diploma and will be attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut in the fall.

Courtney said, “It’s a bit of an unusual job, but it’s helping me expand my knowledge of art, which is great experience for the future.”

Lara echoed those sentiments, saying “This is a unique opportunity in that it blends the worlds of art, business and technology, and I’m really pleased to be working with Butterfield to gain this experience.”

The Butterfield Summer Student Programme, which runs from May through August, provides an opportunity for Bermudian high school, college and university students to gain business experience and develop skills and important business contacts.

This year, Butterfield has added a community service component to the Programme, requiring students to participate in the Centre of Philanthropy’s Summer Intern Community Day, during which the students will give their time to support one of the recipient charities of the Butterfield Hope Award.
