Joshua Alvera Wins Peter Mitchell Scholarship
PwC announced today [Oct 2] that their 2013 Peter Mitchell Scholarship award has been granted to Joshua Alvera.
The prestigious scholarship is designed to help Bermudian students to further their educational goals, boost their career prospects and give them a bright future in professional services.
“On behalf of PwC, I am pleased to offer my congratulations to Mr. Alvera. He is an outstanding young Bermudian who shows great potential and we are happy to give him the support he needs as he embarks on his career,” said Darren Johnston, CEO, PwC Bermuda.
Managing Director Tom Miller, Joshua Alvera and Director David Gibbons:
Mr. Alvera recently graduated from Gordon College where he majored in accounting and finance. His next step is to complete his MBA at Boston College where he is currently enrolled. Prior to attending Gordon College, he attended high school in Long Island and hopes to qualify as a CPA and CFA upon completion of his MBA in 2015. He is also an alumnus of Saltus Grammar School.
Mr. Alvera was delighted to be recognised as the Peter Mitchell scholarship recipient, an award named in honour of one of the firm’s former leaders.
He said, “I am very grateful to be the recipient of this prestigious award. As I prepare to further my career through pursuing an MBA, this award not only provides financial support but a wonderful network of PwC professionals who will provide me with the type of support, new work opportunities and coaching that I need to continue building my professional experience.”
This past summer marked his second intern experience at the firm, and he was among 17 interns and co-op students at PwC this year.
Outside the classroom and work, Mr. Alvera is passionate about contributing to the community. Currently he volunteers at the Tax Workshop in Boston, an initiative that assists low income families file tax returns as well as a member of the Financial Affairs Committee for Boston College which oversees funding for college societies. He is also an active member of the Evangelical Church and enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids.
The scholarship is a key component of PwC’s HeadStart initiative, which provides career opportunities to Bermudian University students studying business at the graduate or undergraduate level. The scholarship is awarded to students who not only demonstrate academic strength and have a well-rounded school career, but also have a strong character and leadership abilities.
“PwC Bermuda is committed to developing talented and ambitious young Bermudians by supporting them with a range of work experience, mentoring and real on-the-job learning experiences that meet their needs both in skill development and interests. I’m gratified that we can offer Mr. Alvera valuable financial and coaching support as he completes his studies. We wish him great success and are confident that he will make a valuable contribution to our firm and the Bermuda’s business sector.” says Mr. Johnston.
