Photos: Powerboat Racing Halted After Accident
The Bermuda Powerboat Association’s Memorial and National Championship Race Day came to a halt on Sunday [Oct 6] when Andy Stoneham and Steven Eversley were thrown from their boat #1 Suspect during the Memorial Race.
Both were transported to the King Edward Memorial Hospital where it was revealed that Eversley was suffering from two cracked ribs and a bruised right leg while Stoneham was still being evaluated.
The race was well underway with eleven boats on the course when on the fourth or fifth lap, Stoneham and Eversley were negotiating a right turn around the marker when the incident occurred and the pair were thrown from the boat and into the water.
Crash boats and private vessels all raced to the area to assist with current Bermuda Powerboat Association President Ernie Mello and others jumping into the water to help the injured pair.
After the incident, Andy Stoneham gives a thumbs up as he is transported to an awaiting ambulance:
They were brought back to the Spanish Point Boat Club dock where personnel from St. John Ambulance tended to the pair before conveying the men to the hospital for further evaluation. Racing was called off for the remainder of the day following the incident.
