Cabinet Building Receives Donated LED Lights

December 15, 2013

In an effort to add to the traditional Christmas decorations on the Cabinet grounds on Front Street, the private sector has come together to provide cost-efficient lights and manpower to decorate the Cabinet building throughout the Christmas season.

The idea to decorate the building was the brain child of Diana Martin, Executive Vice President of Bermuda Development Associates Ltd. who states that she always wanted to see Front Street lit up with beautiful Christmas lights, from one end of the street to the other.

Ms. Martin commented, “It has long been my vision that Hamilton could be one of the most beautiful nighttime cityscapes in the world, if the rooflines and windows of most of the buildings from Hamilton Fairmont to the Cabinet Building [and even beyond and behind – like the House of Parliament and Cathedral] were outlined in white lights.

“The lights could be powered by solar panels, and left up year round for special occasions, making Bermuda a destination for shopping, for special and romantic occasions [at night], and encouraging more activity in the city at night.

“Imagine how we could promote Bermuda as the most beautiful Christmas shopping destination, and the most romantic Valentine weekend destination. A concert destination. Etc. if we had such a cityscape at night!”

“I hope the Cabinet Building lighting, [using only LED lights which were donated] all of which costs the approximate equivalent of ONE 150 watt bulb or less than 5% of incandescent lights, inspires other business owners/building managers to aim to do the same thing over the next few years, until we have ‘lit up Hamilton’ at night and created this wonderful nighttime cityscape to be the backdrop for all kinds of wonderful activities year round!” she said.

Premier Craig Cannonier added “I’d like to thank Ms. Martin for her vision and hard work. She was highly aware of the economic challenges of the government to fund such an endeavour but has managed to galvanize volunteers from the private sector to donate everything and inspire businesses along Front Street to use cost efficient LED lighting to decorate their store fronts.”

Companies who contributed to the initiative include the Bermuda Development Associates Ltd., who provided the concept and design, Joy Lusher Real Estate Ltd., Air Care, Belco, [Ascendant], Mailboxes Unlimited, Redeemed Construction, Undercover Tent Rentals and Sousa’s Landscaping who have all donated funds, manpower, expertise, and equipment. Cabinet staff and Public Works and Engineering Staff were also instrumental in contributing to the project.

I wish the PLP had been as responsible, instead of spending like drunken sailors resulting in us being broke!
Thankyou Ms Martin, the Cabinet Building looks beautiful.

    • In the spirit of Christmas let’s stop with the blame game and be truthful across the board. We can blame P.L.P until the cows come home but this long drawn out economic affair took place across the board, when you look back at the long standing companies and wealthy families that took a great portion of their wealth out of circulation in Bermuda’s economy and placed it in other jurisdictions when the P.L.P came into power and during the P.L.P tenure.

As as us being broke, many Bermudians live way above their means and i for one have been guilty of that, and we put our hat were we could not reach it, our spending habits is a lot left to be desired and our charitable giving mostly comes only in a time of major crisis.
To many of us want to point finger at the former government because of the state we are in, the P.L.P was not in that boat alone.

If you do some extensive research it may surprise you how many in the O.B.A and the former U.B.P slept in the same bed as the P.L.P when they were in power, and for that matter it may Surprise you how many of the P.L.P is sleeping in the O.B.A’s bed as we speak, read between the lines, it’s called politics or as many refer to it as poltitricks.

Needless to say there are enough businesses around Bermuda who rip people off everyday that can give back to the community at least once a year, when you think of the 300 to 700% mark up they put on their goods. Then finally to thank Mrs martin is a correct thing to do which I do see where she has stated it was a vision that she had and if you know anything about truth, The people perish because of the lack of vision but when one has visions and have the means to carry it out, we all benefit and prosper as a result.

There was a time when Hamilton was lit up so bright this time of year that you felt the spirit of being festive but has in recent years become very dreary looking and I and you can not lay that at the feet of this administration or the former administration, as that comes under the Corporation of Hamilton, so your cheap shot at the P.L.P is not working even though I understand it is a Government building.

Maybe capital G would be a cheerful giver and decorate the Dame Lois Browne Evans court building, and while we are at maybe someone can go back down to the cabinet building and decorate with lights the statue of Sally Bassett, because you know that their are those who will delightfully decorate Johnny Barnes statue since they paid for it.

Corporation of Hamilton is the remaining cancer cells of DREB’s PLP.

      • Hmmm says:

Duane, please stop spewing your personal agenda over this. Drove past, liked it…thank you to those that did this. Sorry about Duane, I’m sure he likes it too.

        • There is no personal agenda and i think the cabinet building looks beautiful, so lets set the record straight as I have no political affiliations of any sort, because i am not impressed by this administration or the former administration, so do not paint a picture of me as you know my thoughts or actions.

I just think your a sorry soul looking for words to say, to impress others that you have a hole in your head.

          • Hmmm says:

            Like I said

“Sorry about Duane, I’m sure he likes it too”

      • campervan says:

In the spirit of Christmas lets stop with the anti gay rhetoric and promote mutual love and understanding to all who live here.
Lets take a leaf out of Mandela’s book and support gay marriage.

        • We already support Gay marriages joker, just look up the true meaning of the word gay and you will find it’s true definition is Happy, and there are many happy marriages in this country that have been blessed in the sight of God and will continue to be blessed because they did it according to God’s ordinances and not from a abomination stand point.

          • campervan says:

Mandela subscribed to my view point. Does that make him a joker in your eyes?

    • LET it Go says:

@Waste not stop bieng a idiot

I wish the white man had not place my black ancesters in chains and whip us like dogs. Then maybe we wouldn’t have so much division.

Thankyou Ms Martin, the Cabinet Building looks beutiful.

NOW YOU SEE HOW STUPID THAT SOUNDS, WHEN WILL PEOPLE LET IT GO.

    Great idea.

  3. Stephen Thomson says:

Hamilton is a beautiful city. Lets put flower baskets on the shops, lights on the buildings and get on with redeveloping the waterfront. We are sooooo slow to act. We discuss, meet, argue and discuss again. Just do it as Nike says. Or as AIG says, “the worst decision in life is to make no decision at all”. Lets go Bermuda….its time to act.

  4. Hmmm says:

What has all the above got to do with donated lights and goodwill in the article. Thank you folkk who donated.
