December 5, 2013

In Magistrates Court this morning [Dec 5] a 60-year-old man — whom the Court heard had a criminal record spanning back some 40 years —  was fined $2700 for dishonestly receiving a stolen item.

Steven W Pitt pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving a gold chain valued at $700 in September 2012. He was fined $2,700 with thirty days in prison in default of payment.

The Prosecutor told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that Mr Pitt had been arrested after Police investigations had traced the gold chain after it was snatched from the neck of a man on Happy Valley Road.

It was sold to one of the cash for gold operations in the city of Hamilton, and a photo ID on an invoice traced back to Mr Pitt. When he was arrested Mr Pitt told Police: “I had no idea it was stolen.”

Before sentencing, the Prosecutor told the Magistrate that Mr Pitt — who was given 30 days to pay the fine — had a criminal history spanning back some 40 years.
