Raleigh’s Mike Spurling Receives MBE Award
Michael Spurling, the founder of Raleigh Bermuda, recently received his MBE from Prince Charles in recognition for his role in making the organisation a success.
As noted on the group’s website, “Mike Spurling’s award recognises the seminal role he has played in Youth Development through setting up Raleigh Bermuda. He received his honour from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who was instrumental in the founding of Operation Raleigh, as they were known initially.”
According to their website, Raleigh International creates and runs “meaningful sustainability projects which are designed to create a positive impact in the communities and areas in which they take place, and also increase the leadership, teamwork and employability skills of our volunteers.
“Volunteers are trained and supported throughout the programmes, which can include community, environmental, and adventure projects. Raleigh’s vision is to create a global community of inspired young people committed to working together regardless of age, social background, culture and nationality, to build and maintain strong and sustainable communities across the globe.”
Mr Spurling was one of six Bermudians named on the 2013 Queen Birthday Honours List.
