Student Art Competition Winners Announced
The 2013 Annual Bermuda National Gallery Student Art Competition attracted a total of 350 entries from 17 primary, middle and senior schools.
An awards ceremony was held at the Bermuda National Gallery on Tuesday [Dec 10] for the winners in each category, and prizes were provided by Office Solutions and American Airlines. This year’s competition was held in partnership with the Human Rights Commission and sponsored by BELCO.
The theme was “Eyes on Bermuda: My Community, My Bermuda,” which asked students to consider the question, ‘When you look at Bermuda, what do you see?’
A total of 350 entries from 17 primary, middle and senior schools participated in this year’s competition. The artwork from all participants will be on display at the Bermuda National Gallery through Friday, December 21.
Minister Wayne Scott, HRC Executive Officer Lisa Lister Reed, BELCO’s Denton Williams, judges and several student winners:
The awards ceremony was a particularly poignant occasion as it fell on Human Rights Day, December 10, which coincided with the Memorial Service for Nelson Mandela held in South Africa and acknowledged around the world.
Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reflect on achievements and challenges, and to renew, collectively, our commitments to making the world a safer and just place for all people.
An HRC spokesperson said, ‘The Bermuda National Gallery has provided a powerful platform for students to express themselves, and we were honoured to partner with them.
“The observations and expressions reflected in the students’ creations were diverse and striking. The artwork revealed the insight and awareness young people have of the challenges facing our island, as well as their vision for a bright and healthy Bermuda.
“As you cast your eyes around the walls of the gallery, beautifully designed to showcase the 350 plus submissions, it is a stark reminder of the urgent duty we each have to foster positive relations in our community and to diligently commit to ensuring a brighter future for our young people.”
