2014 Duckett Memorial Rugby Match Results
The 2014 Duckett Memorial was held this past weekend and prior the match, a moment of silence was observed out of respect for the late Devrae Noel Simmons, a well known rugby aficionado who passed away earlier in the week.
The Ladies 1st Teams took to the field, with Police taking on the Rest, with the Rest winning 2 – 1. The Police Ladies lone try came when Isabel van der Westhuizen went over and when the Ladies 2nd teams took to the pitch the Police Ladies defeated the Rest 2 – 0. Johanna Godfrey scored both tries for the Police Ladies.
In the match for the Duckett Memorial Shield the Police defeated the Rest 21 – 12. Ben Bezlei, Tommy Edwards and Dan Cole all scored a rry each for the Police, while Cole kicked 3 Conversions. Shauntino Simons and Angus Warnich scored a try each for the Rest, while Rich Cumbers kicked a conversion.
In the Men’s 2nd game the Rest defeated the Police 24 – 17. Jermal Woolridge, Kieth Robinson, Aldo Campbell and David Cook all went over for a try each for the Rest, while Andrew Carries kicked 2 conversions. The Police got tries from Roedolf van der Westhuizen, Hamish Homer and Nigel Burgess, while Mike Kane kicked a conversion.
The match is named after George Duckett, a former Commissioner of Police who was assassinated in 1972. He was a larger than life man at 6’5” tall, from Lancaster UK. He was also an ardent rugby fan.
In 1973, the Police Rugby Section commenced an annual memorial game which is at present the longest running memorial game in Bermuda. Former colleagues and ‘Faded Blues’ [former police rugby players] continue to show their respect by attending this police sporting tradition.
