Weekend Bermuda Hockey Federation Results
This past weekend saw BHF hockey action for both men’s and women’s teams, with several games taking place through January 11 and January 12.
First up over the weekend were the women’s Canaries B versus the Swallows B, with the Canaries taking the game 2-0. Both teams were on the attack from the start despite the Swallows playing with a squad of 10.
The Canaries first penalty corner was awarded from a foul in the circle, which was injected by Georgi Drover to Rebecca Gibson, that was struck into the goal to the right of the Swallows keeper in the 7th minute, pulling the Canaries up 1-0 through the end of the first half.
The second half commenced with several plays by both teams, and with the ball hitting a defenders’ foot, the Canaries were awarded their second penalty corner, again injected by Drover to Gibson, but was defended well by the Swallows’ Shallan Dennis for a long sweep out of bounds.
A third penalty corner attempt, this time injected by the Canaries’ Claudine Pullen to Gibson, was executed well at the top of the circle to advance the score in the 55th minute to 2-0 for the Canaries.
Canaries’ defenders Lesley-Jane Smith and Wendy Cassidy cleared away any balls that would reach the top of their circle. Swallows’ Liz Stewart was the playmaker, with great defending performed by Jen Hale and Kelli Nusum.
The weekend’s second match saw the men’s Upstarts take on the Spartans, with the game ending in a 2-2 tie.
This was an evenly matched game from the start. A crack by Upstarts’ Mark Finnigan from an awkward angle into the circle hit the far left post; as the Spartans keeper was already off his line. Tyler Smith’s reverse shot in the empty goal moved them up 1-0 in the 28th minute.
A penalty corner was awarded to the Spartans that was received by Nigel Deane at the top of the circle and his
crack at goal went to an Upstarts’ foot that was destined to go in and a penalty stroke was awarded which was converted to the right of the keeper by Donovan Simmons seconds before the whistle in the 35th minute of the first half.
Four minutes into the second half saw the Spartans’ Joshua Thompson carry the ball to the base line towards the “D” and, with the Upstarts’ goalie drawn out of position, he scored a field goal in the bottom left of the goal to get the Spartans back into the lead.
Ten minutes later, the Upstarts’ Mark Finnigan dribbled the ball down to the base line and into the circle and slipped the ball between the Spartans’ keepers pads for a field goal, tying the game. Although the Upstarts were awarded a penalty corner in the 65th minute hoping to advance their score with five minutes left in the match, the game ended all tied up at 2-2.
The third match brought together the women’s Wildcats B and Bluebirds B, with the Wildcats eventually taking the game 4-1.
The Bluebirds’ Jill Finnigan scored a penalty corner in the 12th minute, while the Wildcats’ Belthea Pringle executed a penalty corner in the 17th minute, with teammate Zina Jones scoring a hat trick of field goals in the 25th, 38th and 62nd minutes.
The weekend’s final match saw the women’s Ravens B take on the Longtails B, with the Ravens emerging victorious with a 4-0 win.
The Ravens’ Carolyn Soares scored a field goal in the 34th minute in the first half, with teammate Jessica McClure executing a penalty corner in the 41st minute, and a field goal in the 50th minute from a ball that hit the cross bar. Georgia Harris rounded out the scoring with a field goal in the 47th minute from a lone run into the circle.
