16 Year Old Charged With Taking Cycle
In Magistrates Court this morning [Apr 30], a 16 year old male was charged with taking a cycle without the owner’s permission and using force to do so. The action was alleged to have taken place in February 2014.
When charged, the teenager pleaded not guilty. Lawyer Saul Dismont said that he was coming on record as his defence lawyer and challenged the process. The lawyer said that the 16 year old should be treated as a juvenile and the case should be dealt with in the Bermuda Court set up for handling juvenile cases.
However, Prosecutor Loxly Rickett said that under Bermuda law, prosecution in the Magistrates Court was the proper and lawful procedure.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said that the appropriate time to mount a challenge to the process would be at the commencement of the teenager’s trial set for August 2014. The Magistrate set bail at $3,000 and required a surety.
