Public Meeting Tonight On Channel Options

April 1, 2014

Bermuda Environmental Consulting Ltd [BECLtd] will be hosting the first of their Town Halls this evening [Apr 1] at the Anglican Cathedral Hall from 6.00pm – 7.30pm.

The Government is looking at options for upgrading Bermuda’s shipping channels to allow newer, larger classes of cruise ships to enter, as well as to improve overall access for all commercial shipping.

BECLtd has been engaged by the Government to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment [EIA] of three possible options for the modification of Bermuda’s shipping channels.

The three options that are to be examined are:

  • Improvements to the North Channel – which involves dredging and widening of the current channel with some removal of coral reefs
  • Improvements to the South Channel – which involves extensive dredging of sand
  • Realignments and improvements to the South Channel – which involves extensive dredging of sand

For those that cannot make this evening’s meeting, there will also be one in Dockyard on Thursday evening  [Apr 3] from 6.00-7.30 at Heritage Wharf Cruise Ship terminal and one in St George’s at Pennos Wharf on Wednesday 9th April.  In addition, there is a dedicated website [www.channelstudy.info] containing various information about the channel study.

“We are keen to hear what the community has to say, to learn of any concerns they might have or consider any ideas that might be forthcoming,” a BECLtd spokesperson said.
