YAO Baseball League: Cubs & Yankees Win
The Y.A.O. Baseball League opened its 2014 Cal Ripken season this past weekend, with the Orioles playing the Cubs in the morning and the Yankees playing the Phillies in the afternoon.
Cubs win over Orioles 19-5
The morning game had the Orioles jumping out to an early lead, led by Connor Somerville, Liam McCue and Darion Davis. The Cubs came back in their half of the inning, led by Noah Simons. Orioles pitching struggled, with the Cubs breaking it open, scoring a total of 16 runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings.
Cubs starter and winning pitcher, Alex Bordage settled down, after a tough 1st inning, pitching 2 2/3 innings striking out 7 and walking one. Sam Resnik came in and shut down the Orioles pitching 1 1/3, striking out 4 and walking one.
Yankees win over the Phillies 17 to 9
Yankees started off strong with fours runs in each of the 1st and 2nd innings but the Phillies equaled this with 3 runs in 2nd and 5 in the third. However the Yankees fought back and scored 4 runs in each of the 4th and the 5th innings to increase their lead by 9. Nic Martin then shut down the Phillies bats in the 6th inning with a three up and three down inning.
Jack Martin went 3 for 4 with 7 RBIs while Nic Martin went 2 for 3 with 5 RBIs for the Yankees. Jackson Burns went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs for the Phillies. The winning pitcher was Nic Martin who went three innings with 6 strike outs and only one earned run.
The games scheduled for next weekend have the Phillies playing the Orioles at 10:30 and the Yankees playing the Cubs at 1:30.
The 13-15 year olds also opened up this weekend with the game featuring the Pirates and Orioles. Corey Simas started the offense out quickly with a deep shot to left field and landing a double and scoring later in the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Orioles’ bats came alive as Olu Salawu belted a double to right center field and Donovan Stubbs followed that up with a line drive single scoring Salawu and putting the O’s on top, 2-1 at that point.
However, the day would belong to Corey Simas and Pirates as Simas pitched a complete game giving up only 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 14 of the 26 batters he faced. At the plate Simas had 2 hits with 2 R.B.I.s, and teammates Stephon Paynter, Kalae Fox and Scott Bean also all contributed with 3 RBI’s each. The player of the Game was Corey Simas
The Pirates and Orioles will be playing again next week at 10:30am.
