Chewstick Honours Maya Angelou With Mural
Honouring her contributions to both the creative community and humanity at large, the Chewstick Community Art Program painted a mural of the late Dr. Maya Angelou on the exterior wall of their facility, which is located on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street,
The new painting replaced the mural of human rights icon Nelson Mandela, and the public was invited to enjoy the existing mural and write one last personal message on the exterior wall before it was covered.
Chewstick thanked all the volunteers for helping with the mural, OBM International for their financial sponsorship, Pembroke Paint and Rowe Spurling Paint for donating paint, and the Corporation of Hamilton for removing a street light bulb on short notice.
Nice, but would’ve been good to have a permanent mural of Mandela somewhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I totally agree…I also am somewhat taken-aback in seeing the mural of President Nelson Mandela painted over Please, have someone paint it on either side of the building so that those coming by may be reminded of, “forgiveness” and what it was that one man accomplishments by learning to forgive.
Typo: what one man accomplished…
no disrespect to the poet but to paint over nelson mandela shocks
the poet could have been placed somewhere else that’s all I am saying
That’s the biggest problem with people of color, we’ve been forgiving all throughout our History while the perpetrator’s get off Scot Free and have no REMORSE not to mention RETRIBUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fitting. This makes me happy. Thank you.
Nice tribute;
What a wonderful project honouring such an amazing lady.
Thank you Chewstick, volunteers, OBM, Pembroke Paint, Rowe Spurling and the Corporation of Hamilton for your kind contributions of time, effort and financial support.
WELL DONE CHEWSTICK!!! Excellent art work!!!
Well done. Well done. I look forward to seeing Bermuda’s equivalent on that wall one day.
Once there was a group called a fraternity and they had a Dr. Drew day in that area. Namedafter the famous black American doctor who discovered plasma. Nothing done for Dr. Can or Dr. Gordon or Dr. Ball. Maybe they did not know their own history or revealed yet again the terrible effects of post slavery syndrome or something like that. Thank you Maya but where is the Bermudian receiving such an accolade. Oh…..how ironic…it is on Jamaica Grill. They honor us. Wow.
We always look at a person as being great in some way. But that person of great will always mention other people who have greatly influenced them in their life and we the admirer will always neglect the ordinary people that moves one forward.
If you have a suggestion for a bermudian hero for the next time the wall changes, I am sure that chewstick will be happy to hear it. In fact I have heard that they are planning to portray a local ancestor for the next one….since it is meant to keep changing….grow up and stop using bernews to bicker for no good reason.
Yeah this is awesome. I like how they plan to update the murals every so often. It certainly lifts the neighbourhood up a little!
