July 13, 2014

Yesterday [July 12] Premier Michael Dunkley, joined Minister of Tourism Development & Transport Shawn Crockwell and Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy for an informal groundbreaking at the Pink Beach Club.

The event signals the formal start of redevelopment works at the hotel site, which is being developed by Sardis Developments Ltd. Also present at the groundbreaking on Saturday was Sardis Development Ltd. representative, Mr. Stephen King.

A spokesperson said, “Currently there are demolition works already taking place at the site. And it is anticipated that full construction works on the site will start immediately on the planned 34-room boutique hotel.

“As a particular note, this project is one of the first projects that will benefit from the construction tax relief which was announced by the Premier in May.”

Today Premier said, “We were thrilled to signal the development of the Pink Beach site with Saturday’s groundbreaking. It is an indication to the people of Bermuda that tangible work is underway regarding hotel development.

“I’m pleased to also highlight that our construction relief initiative came into effect on July 1st, and the Pink Beach redevelopment is one of the projects that will benefit from this initiative, and this will translate into jobs for Bermudians.

“This Government continues to work hard towards turning our economic fortunes around and Saturday was a demonstration of our promise. We will continue to work with those entities that are committed to and supportive of Bermuda and I wish to thank Sardis Development Ltd. and Mr. King for their dedication to this project,” added the Premier.

Minister Fahy — who has the Department of Planning under his remit and who is also a member of the Economic Development Committee [EDC]  – said, “I would like to thank the Department of Planning for their efficient processing of this project – in particular the Director of Planning Aideen Ratteray Pryse and Planners Tamsyn Doran and Victoria Pereira who have worked tirelessly to process this application as quickly as possible, despite tight deadlines and the complexity of the project.

“The redevelopment of Pink Beach is an exciting event for Bermuda. As the Premier noted, this will result in employment opportunities for Bermudians and will be a dynamic new boost for tourism.”

Minister Crockwell added, “From a tourism standpoint, we are very encouraged to see some movement with this property. There are genuine strides being made with hotel development in Bermuda and Pink Beach is proof positive of that.

“It’s about ensuring that Bermuda increases its hotel inventory so that we can remain competitive and welcome more visitors to our shores. I anticipate that once this project is complete it will be a first class addition to our overall visitor offering. And I want to echo the Premier’s sentiments in thanking Sardis Developments Ltd. and Mr. King for their confidence in Bermuda’s tourism product.”

And Constituency representative Sylvan Richards said, “This location is considered to be one of the most breathtakingly, beautiful areas in Bermuda. We welcome this hotel redevelopment and are pleased with its progress thus far. Mr. King should be commended for his efforts to breathe new life into our tourism product.”

Thank you team OBA! You are Standing Strong for Bermuda and its children’s financial future rather than walking out on your paid responsibilities a’ la the opposition.
The team that gets stuff done.

      @ campervan,here-here!
Presently the Progressive Labour Party are pissin’ into the winds:-( (What a waste of a few good men and women)There’s far-more work coming to them that have been praying for work…What then can / will the P.L.P. complain about?

      • Just asking says:

Hey Ray which one went to jail and which one stole the seat from a surrogate.

  2. Kangoocar says:

WOW!!!! What a difference an election makes?? I would like to thank all the sensible voters in BDA for electing the OBA!!! It is nice to see the difference between a government that had us in a total decline position (plp) to what we have now, which is a government ( OBA) that actually makes investors want to invest!!! This development will certainly put food on the table for many hungry construction workers that find themselves in that position because of the past incompetence of the plp!!! Congrats OBA, keep doing what you are doing and just simply ignore the plp get in the way nonsense!!! Hopefully the plp will stay out of the parliament secessions ( without pay off course ) which will enable more things to come down the pipeline!!!!!

    • frank says:

to put Bermuda back on the map we need a hotel development with way more than 34 rooms the tax breaks should be given for nothing less than 100 rooms

  3. Born Bermudian says:

Now let’s permit this same initiative be applied to the redevelopment of the former Sonesta Beach property. No permission eguals no work and no jobs and money will be flying the coop. We are watching and waiting so let’s get this island rolling.

  4. slouching says:

u all are idiots if u think this photo op means anything, there are no investors in the pic, that says it all.

    • Put pupils first says:

It does mean the OBA are willing to work on a Saturday.
The PLP enjoyed a long weekend.

Why not read before commenting? Nevermind, now I guess you will be slightly more positive about the project.

You lot hate to see success don’t you.

Meanwhile we’re still waiting for ground to be broken on the Hyatt, promsed to be November 2011 by the failure Premier Ewart.

  5. Notsofast says:

This is a crying shame. Great photo and great opportunity for one man to get 5 1/2 acres and a beach all to himself. The construction jobs will be temporary and the hotel workers will number 56. Hope selling Bermuda’s soul will be worth it.

This was a huge mistake from the OBA and it’s unfortunate that they don’t understand the numbers. I expected better.

    • Raymond Ray says:

Regardless, if he gets a small beach and 5.5 acres of land to himself or not, the man has paid cash money for it…Money, (in case you’ve forgotten)is what Bermuda is in dire need of :-( Another job well done by the One Bermuda Alliance!

    • sonso says:

“This was a huge mistake from the OBA and it’s unfortunate that they don’t understand the numbers. I expected better.”

So what makes you so qualified to understand them then? Please do tell!

  6. Smart Gal says:

Ok – Pictures looks good – but why – was not the PLP there for this important ground braking – both parties should have there to show support for all of Bermuda – were they not invited? Or did they did choose not to attend? To me this is telling how our political party’s choose to behave. I do not want to hear any rhetoric from the BT or any of the PLP supporters. I just want the truth. Please OBA tell us the truth. thank you

They were still sat outside the house of assembly waiting for the Governor to be recalled.

    • BDA Diva says:

Im sorry…..when is the last time you saw the PLP government invite their Opposition to a press conference?? Think about what you are asking……….

  7. Herbalist says:

The PLP will not even go to work. What an example to the people. Please people, vote OBA, our children depend on it.

  8. slouching says:

just googled sardis – no website – they are not the investors, the investors are “the project’s financiers, The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Ltd” are the investors which means YOU the taxpayer will footing the bill for the development of a project that never happens – if this was truly meaningful why wasn’t a rep from the bank there – dream on if it helps you sleep at night
