Video: Newport-Bermuda Team Films Journey
A team that participated in the recent Newport-Bermuda Yacht Race took the time to record their adventure using a GoPro camera, revealing the many skills and constant effort required to sail the open seas.
The video, created by Team Checkmate, features the crew of an Alden 44 boat which sails out of Essex Yacht Club. The vessel’s crew is seen navigating their boat through the Atlantic before arriving in Bermuda.
The Newport-Bermuda Yacht Race took place last month, with George Sakellaris’ Shockwave claiming first place in the event on June 23, and Hap Fauth’s Belle Mente coming in at a close second.
The race featured more than 1,500 sailors aboard 162 boats, each making their way from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda over several days, with their progress – and their safety – in large part in the hands of the rough Atlantic Ocean. Beginning on June 20, 2014 off Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport Rhode Island, the race saw participating boats finish off Bermuda’s St. David’s Lighthouse.
The 635-mile biennial Newport Bermuda Race is the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race, one of very few international races, and also one of just two of the world’s scheduled races held almost entirely out of sight of land. Founded in 1906, the Bermuda Race was held for the 49th time in 2014
The next Newport-Bermuda Yacht Race is set to begin on June 17, 2016.
