Reports Of Distress Flare Over Somerset

At approximately 12:30am on Sunday [Aug 3], officials received 911 calls reporting a distress flare sighting in Somerset, and police attended the scene and did not find anything to suggest any persons in distress.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “RCC Bermuda receives 911 calls from several members of the public, reporting a distress flare sighting in the vicinity of Boaz Island, Somerset.

“RCC Bermuda commences Urgency Broadcasts to all vessels in the area. A vessel in the area reports the flare looked like it originated from shore near Boaz Island.

“RCC bermuda calls COMOPS and requests a Police Land Unit to attend and investigate. Police attend the scene and cannot find anything to suggest any persons in distress. As daylight approaches nothing further reported.”
