August 15, 2014

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Aug 15], a 36 year old American vistor who arrived in Bermuda on a cruise ship was fined almost $4,000 after being convicted, on his guilty plea, of possessing various controlled drugs on board the ship.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Daniel Grogan for possessing cocaine in powder form, Ecstasy pills, pills that contained cocaine and cannabis. He was ordered to pay forthwith or face 120 days in prison in default.

Crown Prosecutor Nicole Smith told the Magistrate that on 13th August., the ship’s security staff had alerted Bermuda Customs to smells from Mr Grogan’s cabin. At the cabin door, Mr Grogan’s wife greeted Customs officers and, after questioning, said that she’d “rather not” give Customs Officer her permission to open the safe in the cabin.

The Crown Prosecutor said that a full cabin search was completed which turned up controlled drugs in the safe and in the bathroom.

The Crown Prosecutor told the Magistrate that Mr Grogan had told Police that he had purchased the drugs in NYC and had paid $560 for what he had bought.

Mr Grogan said that he would not be returning to Bermuda.
