Some people refuse to stop at pedestrian crossings, flashing lights and all and they just drive on by, wishing her a speedy recovery.
The lights were not flashing, I was there, The lights are there for a reason yet people refuse to use them. If this happened in the city they would push that button and wait till the lights turned.JS
blame the victim. classic.
Did I say it was her fault…I hope she makes a full recovery, all I was saying even tho pedestrians have the right away common sense should always be into play, Ive seen many just step off the sidewalk. And yes if there are lights there USE THEM! You cant miss those flashing yellow lights!
People miss those lights everyday, I push the button to cross at pedestrian crossing and people look, some even say sorry ….and drive on by!!!
The lights maybe new but the crossing has always been there…..No matter what….the pedestrian ALWAYS has the right of way….
Pedestrians always have the right of way, flashing lights or not. I am not going to speculate what did or did not happen. hope that lady have a full recovery.
Hope she is OK and makes a full recovery.
But still would u just step off a sidewalk wifout looking???
People need to know the law. The Road Traffic Act states that the onus is on the DRIVER to approach a pedestrian crossing with caution.
You hit somebody on a crossing, it is the fault of the DRIVER just as it is when striking somebody from the rear.
Well maybe in your hood.
Garbage.
Everything you write is garbage
Pedestrians do not always have the right of way. The law is very specific. The pedestrian must stop and wait for the traffic to come to a complete stop before crossing. This does not mean saunter across reading a newspaper, text messaging, having morning coffee or running in front of moving traffic expecting it to suddenly stop because you have not got the brains you were born with.
At 79 years old, Show some compassion please.
@ Tough Love….I’m sure Typhoon wasn’t speaking about the lady involved this accident but how people should NOT act on crossings in general. I hope so, anyway.
Typhoon, which law specifically states what you claim?
The Act does not state that at all. Common sense would dictate that pedestrians do that, but the Act states that a driver should approach a crossing at such a speed that they can stop BEFORE they approach the crossing. It’s funny you talk about distracted pedestrians, when in most cases it is the DRIVER that is distracted.
The law clearly states that the DRIVER needs to look out for PEDESTRIANS, and not vice versa.
Not saying you’re wrong but could you copy and paste where the law states this? I was always taught it is up to drivers to be aware. If people jay-walk, I personally look at their body language, you look at me, realize you’re hindering traffic and hurry across the road, I slow down for you. You look at me and continue at your own leisurely pace I’ll effin crush you because ignorance has no place in this world. Coming to a marked cross walk I always, always, slow down because the pedestrian has the right of way and even though nobody is on the cross walk they could be about to and it is my job as a good, responsible driver to give them that right. We all have places to be and if we respect each other we should always be able to make it there safely. Accidents do happen, fact of life. In this instance if the driver as heading east the rising sun could have been in their eyes. I wasn’t there, I won’t judge, but really we all need to respect each other. Jay-walking in town 20ft from a crosswalk isn’t respect, it’s frickin lazy.
Come Correct, I assume you can read. Why do I need to copy and paste for you? Have you ever had to do any research, or did your Mommy and teachers do everything for you?
Look up the Road Traffic Act 1947 and you will find your answer.
CC I apologize I realized afterwards that you were not responding to me.
Since you love to cyber stalk and contradict me at every turn, I naturally assumed you were talking to me. My bad.
Cyberstalk and contradict you because of one comment? Get over yourself. Here, I apologize for assuming you were against marijuana completely because you were a cop. That was silly of me and you took a respectable position in correcting me. Happy? Come Corrected.
Marijuana? I thought we were talking about a pedestrian being knocked over.
How long ago did I mention that I was once a cop? The fact that you focused in on me and that one little detail proves my point.
Interesting that I stood out in your mind out of the perhaps hundreds of bloggers and thousands of comments posted since I made that statement. I was always curious as to why you were so negative towards me. You hate cops. Thanks for clearing up that little mystery.
Yes marijuana since you said I Like to cyber stalk you at every turn I could only relate that to the one comment on Alan Gordon’s article.
The fact I remember you used to be a cop only proves I have a good memory not the silly point you keep trying to push.
You didn’t “stand out” in my mind I remember a lot about many different commenters, helps me identify with their mentality. Lastly, I don’t hate anyone, maybe strongly dislike, like I strongly dislike the mentality of most cops. Mystery solved and we didn’t even have to call in Scooby and the gang.
I mentioned that info a year ago, maybe longer. Nobody’s memory is that good.
Can you say “stalker”….
You have it backwards.
You need to read S 27 of the Road Traffic Act. Paragraph 3 says that a vehicle approaching a zebra crossing must do so at a speed that the vehicle can be stopped prior to reaching the crossing, unless there is no pedestrian.
In other words the pedestrian has right of way. The pedestrian does not have to wait; the vehicle does. It doesn’t matter if the pedestrian is reading a newspaper or having coffee, or any of your other silly examples. The vehicle must stop if a pedestrian is there. Period.
Some crosswalks with the flashing lights have the button to activate the lights on only ONE side of the road. Not the best plan in the world.
And your excuse when there are no flashing lights… A pedestrian ALWAYS has the right of way!!!!
100% correct. People need to read the Road Traffic Act before they run their mouths with nonsense.
Until this happens to someone in your family please do not make comments like that those flashing lights do not stay on indefinitely and they are new to a crosswalk. People driving vehicles just need to slow down and pay attention .
Hope the lady recovers swiftly.
Drivers, pleeeease show caution and courtesy on our roads.
Praying for a speedy recovery!
Oh man, wishing her a speedy recovery…
Come on people we have to slow down and use a little more care and attention… Not placing blame on anyone.. just a general observation…
70 years old eh? I guess the driver expected her to jump out of the way like a rabbit. Injuries at that age do not heal very quickly, if they heal at all.
One drivers half a second of impatiance or inattention will cause her pain for the rest of her life.
The stretch of road from Southampton Post Office to Waterlot Inn is a race track for road users. I’m not surprised in the very least. Especially in the early morning hours of the weekend. Wishing the lady a speedy recovery!
Stop making excuses
Slow the heck down
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery and please do not let this knock the wind out of your sails.
Yup creamy you got that straight.
I wish the lady a clean recovery, BUT please have a peek at how to cross a road: http://www.3m.co.uk/intl/uk/3mstreetwise/pupils-looking-right-left-right.htm
I hope she is going to be ok prayers are with her. Leaving from the West end in the morning take extra caution mornings that Sun rise while Beautiful is really blinding. I have had a heck of a time myself in some spots so drive slow people and all need to pay attention think before you make a move.
Pedestrian should always wait for a consent nod from the driver
Not according to the Road Traffic Act. The driver must be ready to stop.
MANAGING RISK.
Most likely the the British driving test is one of the most difficult and complicated to pass, having that license dose not make people accomplished drivers, that takes experience and time during which there is always the element of risk.
You may wonder why the Bermuda Government does not accept the Drivers license from other countries, simply because our rules and of the road are not the same.
There are elements in every thing we do which are left up to the individual, requiring the essential element of “Common Sense”.
Poor judgement, irresponsibility and anarchy on our public roads are recipes for disaster.
You may have the right of way, but that comes with the element of responsibility to avoid collision.
Remember you can be “DEAD RIGHT.
Having a Drivers License is a privilege , it is not a right.
Driving a vehicle on our roads is not a game.
Be Aware, that there are some people who think they are above the law.
Almost every day there are vehicle collisions and near accidents, for which there are consequences.
Unfortunately some body ultimately gets badly hurt.
I hit the button for the flashing lights and still drivers will zip through without a care. Install cameras at a fewof the stops and you would see. Not to say that some people just saunter across or not look….we have some of those too.
