Berkeley Institute Achieves Re-Accreditation
The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Berkeley Institute, Mr. Craig Bridgewater, announced that the Berkeley Institute has been re-accredited by the Commission on Secondary Schools of Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Mr. Bridgewater said, “The Board of Governors is delighted that the Berkeley Institute has re-opened today for the 2014/15 academic year as a fully accredited school having achieved the high standards required for accreditation. This will serve to reassure parents and the wider community that public education continues to meet the standards required to enable seamless transition into post secondary institutions.”
The accreditation is valid through January 1st, 2020.
The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools is a non-profit association that fosters school improvement in early-age through higher education and other educational institutions through self-study, evaluation and accreditation.
Research indicates that “a school accredited by the appropriate accrediting agency can grant credits that lead to seamless transitions into post secondary institutions. On the contrary, a credit that is given by an unaccredited school can turn out to be a waste of time, talent, and treasure”.
The Principal, Dr. Phyllis Curtis-Tweed added, “accreditation maximizes the value of public education. Achieving accreditation is consistent with the school’s core values, specifically, promotion of programme excellence. Accreditation assures parents that the Berkeley Institute is focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation.”

Bermuda College has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) – the oldest accrediting agency in the United States – since 2010. It is the same accrediting body that grants accreditation to such Ivy League universities as Harvard, Yale, MIT and others in the New England area. At the time, Bermuda College was only the seventh international institution to be accredited, and the first institution so honoured in what was termed as the Caribbean region.
There is a lot that goes into accreditation of a school or university. A major factor is why they hired Dr. Curtis-Tweed over Ms. Douglas as principal. If the top person isn’t fully qualified for the position then there goes your accreditation.
