100% Bermudian Rugby Team Named For CAC

November 27, 2014

The Bermuda Rugby Football Union has announced the squad for the 2014 CAC Games — which is currently underway in Mexico — with the BRFU saying this will be the first 100% Bermudian rugby team to compete in an international competition.

“Head Coach Tom Healy has selected a blend of experience and youthful exuberance, but only from those who have shown the high degree of dedication worthy of such a significant milestone in the history of Bermuda sport,” the BFRU said.

“Speedsters Andre Landy and Antonio Perinchief are included after scintillating form in the opening rounds of the season, and impressive performances for the National Team over the past few years.

“David Lunn and Nikye Atherton have been recalled after making their debuts at the RugbyTown 7s in Glendale, Colorado this past August. Whilst Rob Forbes has impressed since joining the training squad just a few months ago.

“Veterans, Steven Husbands and Neville Zuill, who first represented Bermuda 7s as a teenager over a decade ago, will add experience and firepower to the backline.

“Upfront, Jahan Cedanio and Ngarryn Darrell will make their Senior 7s debuts after proving their considerable power isn’t suited solely to the hard yards of the fifteen-a-side version of the game. They take their place alongside fellow forwards Darren Richardson, Somers Brewin and Tashon DeSilva.

“DeSilva will have the added honour of Captaining the team against the best of the Caribbean and Central America. “Tashon has worked extremely hard over the past 12 months, and excelled at the Serevi Rugby High Performance Camp in the Summer. We are extremely grateful for Tashon’s dedication, and the great example he has set for the younger players in the squad.

“His attitude has been fantastic, and he has earned the honour of leading the National Team at the CAC Games. Everyone has pushed for selection. We are excited about the squad we have picked and are looking forward to getting down to Mexico and putting our preparation into practice on the field.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who have made this possible; The Bermuda Olympic Association for all of their effort in coordinating our participation in these Games. The XL Group for their backing of our partnership with Serevi Rugby, and the world class coaching they have provided throughout the past few years.”

“Our logistics partner, DHL, as well as Allianz, Argus, ArielRe, BF&M, Cox Hallet Wilkinson, Digicel, Fireminds, Flanagan’s, Mailboxes, Tokio Millenium Re and The Waterfront for their support. All of us at Bermuda Rugby are extremely grateful.”

“Bermuda will play group matches against Columbia on Friday, November 28 at 1:12pm [BDA time], followed by matches against Barbados [3:40pm] and the Cayman Islands [6:08pm]. On Saturday [Nov 29], the teams will be reseeded before joining Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago in the final knock-out rounds.

Football and Cricket take note: this is how you form a press release, an uplifting piece that motivates your players and recognizes good behaviours so that they will be duplicated.

    Good luck to the team!
