Chinese Lanterns Lights Cause False Alert

On Sunday evening [Nov 23], two people contacted the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre saying they saw orange coloured lights moving quickly in the sky, and the lights turned out to be from ‘Chinese Lanterns’.

said, “A member of the public in the Scenic Heights or Rivera Estate area of Southampton, reported to Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre having seen orange coloured lights moving quickly in the sky nearby. Soon after another member of the public in the same area reported similarly and then during this call also saw yet another similar light in the sky.

“After Bermuda Radio made a few broadcasts to alert vessels in the are to keep a sharp lookout, and Bermuda Police Service was requested to send a patrol to the area to investigate, it was then determined that what was being reported was a series of ‘Chinese Lanterns’ and that no-one was in distress.

“This is a timely reminder to the public that Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre and the Bermuda Police Service welcome notice from those launching ‘Chinese Lanterns’ of the intention to do so, when and where, so that this source can be eliminated from false alerts.”
