Update 11.53pm: Fire Service spokesperson Sergeant Russann Francis reported that “At approximately 8:41 pm on Monday, November 24, 2014, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a brush fire near Riddle’s Bay, Warwick.

“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident with five fire vehicles staffed with 11 personnel. On arrival they discovered a large area of brush approximately 50’ x 80’ fully involved in fire. The duty crew proceeded to extinguish the fire using 2 ½ and 1 ½ hose lines and over 7,500 gallons of water.

“The fire took approximately 1 1/2 hours to bring under control due to thick brush and uneven terrain. Once the fire was brought under control, the fire crew remained on scene to extinguish any hot-spots to prevent the potential of re-ignition.”

It looked like there was a large fire in that area late this morning (around 11:30), with the wind pushing a large plum of heavy grey smoke across the Great Sound toward Somerset.

  2. Quinte says:

It was burning all day. looks like they were burning trees from the recent hurricanes

  3. hmmm says:

When are people going to stop burning foliage. We left the stone age some time ago. We have a facility to dump trees, guys who will truck it for you. For the small stuff, make a compost heap.

Why force neighbours to suffer the smoke polution in their lungs and on their roofs in their homes and on their laundry. Having a fire at your house should be illegal, if it already isn’t.

Basically it is selfish to have a fire to burn foliage. Selfish without care and concern to others.

Perhaps those that disliked, will be happy to pay up the cost of getting clothes cleaned, roof washed and house cleaned from all those they impact.

if the fire brigade get called, they can pay for that too.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

More stink & smoke is created by putting a fire like that out. Let it burn but do it in the hottest & fastest way.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

The big question is was it safe? Kind of early to be burning storm stuff anyway. It has not dried out yet. Better to pile up & wait till at least January. Burn it then & it will go quick & with less smoke.

    WOW!!!

  6. memory lo$$ says:

this does not look like a “controlled burn” which I understand are legal, as long as you inform the fire dept, have hose with substantial pressure and water, and shovels etc on hand.
