Tributes Paid To Businessman Fernance Perry
This morning [Nov 28] in the House of Assembly, MPs paid tribute to businessman Fernance Perry, who passed away yesterday.
Best known for his involvement with the Bermuda Broadcasting Company and the “Piggly Wiggly” grocery stores, Mr Perry also worked with various good causes, and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2007 for services to commerce and the community,
The oldest of eight children, Mr Perry was born in 1922 in the Azores, and emigrated to Bermuda as a child in 1926. He purchased a grocery store in 1950, and expanded in the 1960s, forming the Piggly Wiggly chain, which he later sold, and is now known as Marketplace.
Calling him “one of the greatest entrepreneurs Bermuda has had,” MP Jeff Sousa started the tributes in the House by saying, “As a Bermudian of Portuguese descent myself, I followed the career of this man….this hard working man, as I said, was a great entrepreneur.
“We all know that he played a prominent role in the business community, he was a business leader. He actually was involved with politics at one time,” added Mr. Sousa. “Knowing Fernance personally, he was someone who would always help when asked, particularly when it came to young people.”
Other MPs, from both sides of the aisle, also expressed their condolences to Mr. Perry’s family.
A good man who joined his extended family in Bermuda.
He was a cousin of mine who joined his family abroad in Bermuda.
Always a giving person for those in need.
Rest in peace.
He had a very good innings….
And a lot of $$$ – through shrewd investing!!
1. He should have been knighted
2. There should have been a movie
3. He is a giant in our history for a variety of reasons.
4. There should be a scholarship in his honour
Long may his memory live.
Life well done rip mr. Perry
